Well yeah, you obviously take precautions when you are getting a month's worth of radiation in an hour. But you are still blowing it out of proportion. The sun makes radiation levels that can damage human health, it's called a sunburn.

Everyone needs to calm down a bit for now

Reuters just reports radiation levels 9X normal "West of Tokyo", briefly

http://live.reuters.com/Event/Japan_earthquake2

they got it from Kyodo news http://english.kyodonews.jp/ but the site isnt loading fer me :/

USGS officially upgraded the magnitude of the initial quake from 8.9 to 9.0

This is a more comprehensive read on the level5, possible level6 damage the plants are causing...

Go google translate if you can't read this.

So 300 microsieverts is 0.0003, a long way from what it takes to become nautious at full body exposure. 3000 is 0.003 sieverts.

Average background radiation we sit in just being on earth is about 2400 microsieverts per year (source). So if you were standing near the reactor right now, with no clothes on for 1 hour, it would be like being in your house for 1 month, in terms of radiation exposure.

3 sieverts = death in 50% cases, and 6 sieverts means you're gonna melt.

So while there is radiation outside the reactor, it's nothing to worry about right now.
i wonder how much it takes to cause birth defects in the long run ...

japanese governor said do not listen or read any news reporting outside of japan, or they will eff them up... according to the nhk translation guy.

with water level being so high does this mean sendai/miyagi belong to the pacific ocean and written off japan in the future?

its why im watching NHK rather than all the other major news outlets
NHK is more informative than being selective.
it is dull compared to CNN or BBC..but it goes straight to the point

u didnt get my point did you?

NHK is REPORTING THE NEWS..being less sensationalized. meaning..deliver the news to the public. information to say. whatever presser is released by government officials, NHK will report it. unlike say CNN, which i respect the works of AC360, but try to bring the tragic flaare to feel sorry for them look if u get my drift.

CNN/BBC/ALJEEZERA are all reporting with a bit of flaare

NO WHERE did i say ANY STATION is reporting the full truth
NHK is delivering what officials have stated. no where was there any sort of analysis with the exception of how a reactor works.

its a stupid argument. dude.

if you wanted my take on it? I think the Japanese should have told the whole truth from the get go with the powerplant situation. That way, more aid could have been provided. They only reported on leaks..and thats about it. It left everyone speculating. In a crisis as they are, the officials in Japan shoudl have been clear on the situation.

Japanese president advised people who live in 20-30km distance to stay indoors, shut all vents and air conditioners and do the following:

1. if you have been outside in your clothes, remove them before entering.
2. If there had been clothes hung outside and already completely dried, do NOT bring them into the building as it is most likely the fabrics have already been contaminated.

All measurements of sieverts have upped to milli sieverts, which is 1000x microsieverts, as measured before.

Of course the station is saying that there is no effect to human body. What else do you think they are going to say?

Now being consistantly measured at 400+ milli sieverts so that'd be 400x1000 = 400,000 micro sieverts, at 100,000 sieverts you are looking at that line that says "increased number people be diagnosed with cancer" and right now it's consistently 4x that.

FYI: next line up 3,000,000 ~ 5,000,000 microsieverts or 5000 millisieverts = 50% of the population under this exposure will die.
7,000,000 ~ 10,000,000 microsieverts or 7000~10,000 millisieverts = 100% of people die
10,000,000 ~ 20,000,000 microsieverts or 10,000 ~ 20,000 millisieverts - death of the JCO operator (estimated exposure value)

EDIT: now the official statement says that it's VERY LIKELY that people in the 30km radius will be affected by the radiation on a health level.

EDIT: Reactor #4 is on fire.

Yes, Vancouver will be affected. Since Japan's and Canada's winds are westerlies, the radiation will eventually come here.

u make no sense. nhk aint giving u the full story since they are only reporting what the gov of jpn says, so whats the point?

yeah, cnn/bbc might be full of shit, but at least u get the bigger picture and with that u can judge what u want to believe in.

oh right, u are too fucking dumb to judge and filter out right or wrong.

People really need to do their own research on radiation and what is considered actual danger. I've done a TON of reading over the last few days and have learned a lot of information. Not from news sites, but from actual scientific websites.

You would be quite surprised. The media is making everything sound much worse that it is. Sure there is a possibility of a melt down but it would be nothing close to Chernobyl due to the design of the building and capsule around the rods. Also, you don't have to worry about anything other than radioactive iodine here in NA after a few days. All of which can be easily countered with Iodide pills.

radiation level measured in 東京都日野市南平2丁目のガイガーカウンター

My best guess is Tokyo Prefecture Hino city South Hira 2-chome, as shown here:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sour...,0.297318&z=12

The wind is now ramping up the radiation level in Tokyo prefecture as well.

There's a big problem with the "let's hide inside and ride it out" advice as locals do not have clean water or food supply either. That 20-30km radius range covers a population of 450,000 people.

That's 1/5 of all GVRD population now without clean water or food enough to ride this out for very long period of time.

My prof is calling you an idiot hk2000. If you wanna argue with him email Paulo Sgarbi Ph.D psgarbi@langara.bc.ca

He spent 20 minutes in class talking about nuclear chemistry/physics. He also said the refinery fire is probably worse for people then the threat of nuclear energy.
