We should have a lottery. Whoever guesses within a week of an earthquake, wins the pot. If it's someone from Richmond........... uh......... he won't........ be ........... able to collect............ as he would be..................
Since most of RS members live in Richmond, I'll have a better chance of winning.

if geoglogists were able to predict earthquakes so accurately, japan wouldnt have lost so many lives, so how the fuk are they able to predict it now? cuz theres a clockward pattern? oh please, thats a load of BS
not saying we shouldnt always be prepared, since we live on the pacific ring of fire, we should always have a plan B anyways, predicted earthquake or not

This great geologist releases monthly predictions. He was right ONCE in 1989. Everytime a big quake happens they release these kind of conspiracy theorists into the limelight to scare the sense out of the general public so they buy random overpriced crap ... like that's somehow gonna help em sleep better at night? Because you have a "earthquake kit" you're gonna live? Unless it's strapped to your back, good luck finding it when your house collapses. These news casts scare people, then when people call into ask how they can protect themselves, they'll say go buy this, this and this. People will buy that crap and have a false sense of security. The real information (ie. the Triangle of Life, the fact that you should turn off your gas main, etc.) isn't relayed to the public. I really hate fox news and all the dumbasses who buy into it. I had an argument with a friend who believes this crap lol. I gave up, you can't fight stupidity.

haha, people love to feel smart and rationalize things. Everyone (even fox news viewers) can read a clock ... so why not feed them the info? I know what you mean, its pretty hilarious.

there was a recent news article (cant find it now) that gets in a little more detail which says we get a "big one" every 300-800 years and we've passed the minimum threshold of 300, so "anytime" now
You know what's funny. I've been told that we are going to get the "big one" since Grade 1. I remember doing earthquake drills in Grade 1, you know when that was? 1986.
So since 1986 some scientist has been predicting the "big one" for Vancouver but it still hasn't shown up.
the longer the time between the events, the bigger the eventual event will be. as pressure will continue to build.
if that "schedule" is to be believed, then we are already on borrowed time.
i'm not saying to run around like a chicken with your head cut off thinking the world is ending tomorrow... just that it's never a bad idea to be prepared. i think i'll be filling up a bunch of 2L bottles with water to stash away. the first thing you're going to think when the utilities get knocked out, is "damn, i'm thirsty..." lol

People in the Lower Mainland could drive North (assuming the second narrow and Lions Gate were still standing). South (towards the border? assuming that Richmond and Delta were good). East (Assuming Highway 1 wasn't damaged).
...gas prices will be so astronomically high that you would need to sell all your other earthquake ruined possessions to just to power your Xbox long enough to finish a level of Black Ops.
...or by that time, we won't need gas powered generators anymore since fossil fuels are a thing of the past and now everything runs on fucking magic.

Keep in mind that we're surrounded by rivers and you can't go anywhere without crossing a bridge... and the only bridges likely to survive a major quake (and still be usable, at least) are the newer ones that have been designed to quake standards: Alex Fraser, Pitt River, and Golden Ears (and the Port Mann, if it's finished). So yeah, yer gonna get dinged for the toll if you try to leave town
South... where you gonna go? If this quake hits along the west coast of Vancouver Island, as is expected, everywhere between here and Seattle will be within the same damage radius - you'll just be driving into more of the same. Quakes don't care about borders, the shaking doesn't just stop at the 49th parallel.
Like Civic says, WHY would you leave? Unless you actually have someplace to go, like family in Kelowna or something, what would be the point?

The worst case we have to deal with in the lower main land is flooding from the rivers (a few still have older dams on them, though many have already been upgraded), and people who built on sedimentary cliffs sliding down a mountain/into the water and such (chunks of Westwood over looking he quarry come to mind, as does a lot of UBC).
Richmond's land is reclaimed swamp and could theoretically become unstable, it's not going to instantly become a bed of quick sand though, but evacuation of parts of that area may be required for a brief time.
Outside of potential flood and unstable areas most should be stable enough to remain in, though you may be without power and water for a short time.
I would be far more concerned about the people in Victoria and south island area than the lower mainland.

Was talking about this with a couple of friends the other day. I think if a big enough earthquake does hit us close enough to damage bridges and sink Richmond, it would be pretty hard to evacuate or to bring help in. Even if YVR isn't under water, with no bridges and tunnels connecting everything, getting people and resources in and out would be a problem. Take a ferry to the airport? Prepared to get stranded with very limited resources. A reason why my friend has bullets in his emergency/earthquake kit to fend off looters. Just some random thoughts.
I have 6 25L jerry cans in the garage at any one given time. Cheap Abbotsford gas, LOL.
Get a propane generator and propane. the issue of stock piling gas is it goes bad. Propane doesn't go bad that's the key if you are actually getting ready for "the big one" Posted via RS Mobile
If an earthquake strikes in the pacific ocean, we won't be as threatened as those in vancouver island and california. Our city will flood but at a rate that gives us time to evacuate to the east or wherever.
But if the quake strikes where we are very close to the epicenter, it could be very dangerous for us as buildings will collapse and fire will probably go blazing.
Believe the story or not, I think everyone should be prepared. Have cans and cans of food and shitload of water. Blankets, sleeping bag, flashlight, heating supply (propane, jerry cans of gasoline, etc.). Tools like knives and all that sort of stuff.
After watching the video of the girl predicting the March 11th - 23rd disaster, it's hard not to be superstitious about these things. I'm not religious or anything but I believe in science, physics, and stuff happening in outerspace that will affect our world disasters.
worst thing about that quake is the earthquake "predictors" will be all I TOLD YOU SO on ya
thats the problem, a guy can predict 100 different events, he can get 99 wrong but if one of them happens, all of a sudden the dude is credible and is a fucking psychic and praised
