I mean theres a difference between sharing information with people and making claims.

Please...the first time we were told by "experts" to expect a big ass earthquake, Richmond was still full of white people. | what makes you think the earthquake would hit in the very distant future? making that type of assumption is as ignorant as saying it will happen by the time you read this. the fact is, we don't know when it will happen. it may be beneficial to purchase a generator given the earthquake hits in the next couple days. but then again, when shit hits the fan, we'll go back to our survival ways, and unless you have an effective means of protecting yourself from others, your generator will go to serve the tougher guys

Interesting thought: I saw a map somewhere (might have been on the other quake thread, maybe another board... can't find it now) showing the areas of damage relative to the Sendai quake, in Severe, Moderate, and Little-to-No damage levels... using the ruler on Google Earth, it looks like the radius of damage of the little-to-no damage is at most about 300km - it didn't even touch on Hokkaido.
So if you look at the area off the coast of Vancouver Island where they expect our "big one" to be occur, and draw a ruler into the Lower Mainland... 300km ends up anywhere from Mission, to barely touching Richmond (depending on how far up or down the west coast of Vancouver Island it actually hits). The "moderate" area would barely extend beyond the east coast of the Island.
So if ours is on about the same scale as the Sendai quake - same depth, etc. - it doesn't look the Lower Mainland itself would get that much real shaking. Nanaimo, Victoria, etc. will get it pretty bad, and Tofino, Port Hardy, etc. will basically be flattened even before the tsunami hits them.
Edit: not the one I saw before, but here are a couple examples:

My deductible for my newer home is 20k, contemplating if its worth it or not.

Just wondering how many of you out there have this? 2012 is here and you all know whats going down! | Should check with my insurance broker, but I believe I do. 20k deductible is nothing compared to having to replace a new house. Even if taking into account property/house ratio. Property doesn't go away during an earhtquake, unless you're in Richmond, LOLOLOLOL. J/K....... I know it's not funny for those who live in Richmond. Still........

SEATTLE (AP) -- A magnitude 5.7 earthquake has been recorded about 105 miles west of Ucluelet off the coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
A National Earthquake Information Center geophysicist in Golden, Colo., says there is no danger of a tsunami from the shallow quake. It hit at 12:05 p.m. Saturday.
Geophysicist Rafael Abreu says he doesn't expect to see damage with this quake based on its distance from shore and the low intensity at which it was felt.
A handful of residents in Lopez Island, Wash., as well as Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia, reported feeling it.

Being on the east coast of VI I didn't feel a thing
I'm amazed by the amount of home owners on the west coast that do not have earth quake insurance. Better safe than sorry, folks!

i'm no homeowner but from my understanding earthquake is usually not covered under regular home insurance...(fire..theft..even heard it's separate from 'natural disaster'?) and can be a pricey coverage
correct me if i'm wrong
