SW Marine Drive @ around 7

Anyone know what happened to the south bound at around 7 from UBC? I was heading down and a police redirected back over to the farm and had to take 16th out.

roastpuff 03-31-2011 08:41 PM

Bad accident from what my friend told me. Motorcyclist was hit... bits of car + bike everywhere.

Spectre_Cdn 03-31-2011 08:46 PM

A motorcyclist was killed, the accident happened around 5:30pm

kyoshiro 03-31-2011 08:55 PM

shit, must of probably been the road conditions. They really need to fill up those pot holes on SW marine drive, its a safety hazard.

yugo 03-31-2011 09:24 PM

Saw some disturbing stuff around 5:30pm.
The guys legs were sticking out of the front windshield of the Van that hit him. Is it confirmed that he's dead? RIP

taylor192 03-31-2011 09:48 PM

Someone reported on BCSB that the van pulled out infront of the bike, probably didn't even see the bike due to poor visibility around parked cars on the street... yet the rider was a new rider perhaps riding too fast. The rider was going eastbound and that's where the speed lowers to 50 kmph.

Riders, take it easy, cars are not used to bikes on the road this early in the season.

twitchyzero 03-31-2011 09:49 PM

damn...i was hoping someone wasn't killed cause the streetlights were off when i was leaving campus at 10pm

i remember when that lady got beheaded at pacific spirit park...they shut down SW marine drive and all traffic was rerouted for like 2 weeks

too many cars park there and indeed causes issues with visibility. but yeah the 60 to 50 part, a lot of people continue going at 80+ down there until the fork, quite possible that the biker was going down fast especially if there were no cars in front.

The rider's friend, a girl on a 650R was too shaken to ride her bike back. She did not see happen it as he disappeared out of her view and she arrived at the scene a few seconds after

wow from the looks of it the bike was on the outer lane and the van was coming out make a left and probably not looking left at all looking at its position (which shouldnt have moved a lot)
But yeah make that area a no park zone. Real poor visibility.

bartone 03-31-2011 10:35 PM

Wow, for a bike to do that kind of damage to the van he must've been going pretty fast... This is a scary thought being a rider myself.
RIP

FerrariEnzo 03-31-2011 10:39 PM

ouch.. damn that bike looks like a pocket bike now..

poor fella...

twitchyzero 03-31-2011 10:52 PM

damn that's pretty tragic...van got fucked pretty badly too...did the van driver survive?
i blame expensive on-campus parking to cause that poor visbility..

its not all just the on campus parking, the vancouver office is also to blame to allow that strip of road be park-able causing an increase safety risk. I believe the van driver only sustained minor injuries from the vancouversun website.

Gumby 03-31-2011 11:21 PM

Ouch... RIP.

TRDood 03-31-2011 11:29 PM

wow, so did the guy survive?

The metal and door of the van shouldn't bend that way. Looking at it even makes me uncomfortable. ouch

Gumby 03-31-2011 11:34 PM

No, motorcyclist died.

From http://www.vancouversun.com/news/You...233/story.html

VANCOUVER -- A 27-year-old man is dead after his motorcycle collided with a minivan on Thursday afternoon.

Const. Jana McGuinness, speaking on behalf of the Vancouver Police Department, said that the crash happened around 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of Southwest Marine Drive and Kullahun Drive.

The motorcyclist was riding eastbound along Southwest Marine Drive and collided with a minivan making a left turn to go west from Kullahun Drive, which provides access to the Shaughnessy Golf Country Club.

The force of the collision propelled the motorcyclist into the minivan.

He died a short time later en route to hospital. His identity is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.

The driver of the minivan was transported to hospital for treatment of minor injuries, McGuinness said.

Investigators are looking into several witness accounts of a motorcycle travelling at a high speed along South West Marine Drive shortly before the crash.

As of 9:45 p.m., Southwest Marine Drive remains closed to traffic in both directions as police on scene complete their investigation.

The following bus routes are affected:

· 41 Joyce Stn/UBC

· 49 Metrotown Stn/UBC

· 480 Bridgeport Stn/UBC

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call the VPD's Collision Investigation Unit at 604-717-3012.

Yeah that stretch on the side of the road should not be allowed for parking. It all started with a stupid VW Jetta in the fall term.

Keep it to the other side of the road and everyone's happy

seakrait 03-31-2011 11:52 PM

let's not forget the rider's speed as well. despite being the van's fault, bad visibility due to cars parking there, etc, etc etc... unfortunately the rider had some part in this as well. :(

everyone needs to slow down. even if it is a nice bright sunny day on a seemingly open road. i know i ride as if every cager is out to get me. the frontal profile of a rider is so small that i can't expect a cager to see me very well, esp going at a high rate of speed where i'm barely a dot hundreds of yards away and in your lap the next second.

BNR32_Coupe 03-31-2011 11:54 PM

this reinforces the stereotype that motorcycles = death

lol. i would disagree though it's definitely the riskiest thing i do. but i definitely also think that a lot of the risk is controlled by me as long as i'm always aware, always vigilant. thinking ahead and riding defensively. it's not a thrill-seeking hobby for me as it might be for others. i am a bit older than most of the RS folk here though so that's probably a difference maker as well. i would never advise a young male to get a bike license. just too much testosterone between the ears to listen to common sense. also, the inevitable need to buy a supersport and to make sure it works as advertised. :(

Jermyzy 04-01-2011 12:00 AM

I was there on my bike at 3pm this afternoon. RIP
By looks of the pictures, I would guess he was speeding. Just a few hours before the accident, the cops had a radar trap there too.

unit 04-01-2011 12:00 AM

^any rider will admit that riding is dangerous

theres a time and place for everything, especially for riding. every side street i pass by on a bike is a barrel pointed at me, and riding in the city becomes a game of roulette. definitely have to ride defensively and youll be okay. you don't hear about scooter guys getting offed the way motorcyclists do because they ride 50 kmh or less, at those speeds, you're pretty visible to the average driver who's main priorities are 1. whats for dinner 2. i have so much bills to pay 3. why is my life boring 4. oh yea, forgot to stop

also, does anyone actually find riding in the city enjoyable? to me, the city is an intermission between my home and the backroads, scenic roads, and highways.

It's a real pain in the ass, quite honestly.
