What about macros? Anyone use them?

Canon 50mm macro, 65mm (I think?) 100mm macro and the Tamron 90mm. Are there any wider lenses such as 35 macro?

Double duty lenses, though they're not as fast but it's a sacrifice if you want to be able to get nice and close to the subject...which is how I like to shoot

I use the Canon 100mm Macro L IS often, but my personal favourite is the Nikon 85mm PC-E Micro Nikkor on my 5DmkII with an adapter.

Do you mean a 35mm FF equivalent macro? No, but the Canon 24mm f1.4 can be used as a wide macro...kinda.

Canon 24mm f1.4:

Nikon 85mm f2.8 PC-E on 5DmkII, notice the tilted plane of focus:

I have a Nikon 50mm 1.8. Looking to getting the 85mm 1.8, but I can't seem to find any used ones. Might consider selling my 50mm 1.8 and buying a brand new 85mm 1.8.

Anyone have experience with the Nikon 85mm 1.8? Worth it?

The new Nikon 35mm f1.4 looks sooooooo good, but @ $1800... phew. can't afford it.

Apparently there will be a new 50mm f1.8 AF-S released soon. This came up on Nikon's website today, but they quickly pulled it down.

I'm one of the few Nikon users here
Sigma 30mm 1.4
Sigma 50mm 1.4
Nikkor 50mm 1.8
Tamron 90mm 2.8

I may pick up an 85mm 1.8, I hear Nikon is release a new AF-S version soon. Will see how it compares to the old one or the old 1.4 SAF-D.

I've also been thinking getting rid of my zooms.. the 24-70 is great, but in super low light, it's just not fast enough.

I was thinking of ditching it for a 35 and 85mm set up, but the 85L is just waaaaay too expensive. I've read many good things about the sigma 85 1.4 though. I just don't know if i'm ready to give up the versatility of the zUm. I'll probably end up keeping the 70-200 though.. aaaahhh decisions decisions!

I have a 35mm f1.8 and its good for all general shots. What are 50mm and 85mm best for? I know 50mm is better for portrait shots right?

Another Nikon user here:
50mm f1.8
85mm f1.8

While the 85mm takes spectacular images, it's a tad long on a crop. I keep the 50mm on at all times. Might consider the 35mm 1.8 if I can find a used one for cheap.

Nope. Eventually I'll want to get FF once they become affordable. So the 85mm will be the equivalent of my current 50mm on a crop.

I only have 2 primes at the moment and they're the Canon 50mm 1.8 and the Canon 85mm 1.8.

i don't like the focal ranges on my crop body, but i find them more usable on the full frame.

i try to shoot them wide open whenever possible (or F2/F2.2) and add some sharpening if i have to afterwards.

i wish the Canon 50mm 1.8 was decently built like the Nikon version...lol!

the other odd thing i find is that the 85mm 1.8 i have has some pretty bad purple fringing...especially so on the crop body. odd.

i was debating primes as well as the bokeh is so creamy on 1.4 and faster lenses F2.8 seems so slow compared to a fast prime.

until i can afford some L-primes (35L, 85L, 135L) i'll keep using both zoom and prime for now.

I shoot wide open a majority of the time.

That's due to the higher pixel density of the crop sensor - the sensor is out-resolving the lens.

How do you like the Sigma 30mm? I've been really looking at it for a "normal" prime on my 50D. I just can't justify the cost for the 35L, and even the 28 1.8 tbh. So it pretty much leaves me with this.

What about the Samyang 85 1.4 manual focus. The price is unbeatable and the Bokeh is super creamy apparently but I don't see anyone locally that sells em.

my buddy has it and i'm not impressed with the af motor. I'd gladly pay the extra for the HSM/ 28 1.8 usm. Although iq on the crop was pretty clean with his copy. also i wouldn't mind the extra 1/3 stops with the other 2 lenses.
