it's never about the word, but the context. I really hate people that take words literally, and not the context. Was Kobe calling out the ref for being a homosexual?

Of course not, which is why it's so utterly retarded.

Yeah.... Kobe.... the ref's the fag... not you.

twitchyzero 04-13-2011 08:39 PM

"fucking nigga... omg i got jewed...you faggot...this shit's retarded"

We said this in grade school because we didn't know any better. You are just putting down a race/sexual orientation/mental capability no matter the context.

You don't go around saying 'wow that's buddhist' in frustration, this isn't any different.

LiquidTurbo 04-13-2011 09:06 PM

^

do you get upset too when you hear people say "Wow, I totally owned you that game!"

It's a reference to slavery! You're telling me you've never had an outburst of anger and said some un-PC things?
Like someone said, Kobe wasn't in a gay rally shouting 'faggot'. It's totally different.

It's never about the word, but the context in which the word was said. We have different opinions, but I still think the gay community over-reacted.

Oh noes, somebody fine that guy!

I cringe everytime I hear the word 'fag' out of someone's mouth, it's soo...uneducated.

hotjoint 04-13-2011 09:54 PM

Thats a pretty harsh fine. Stern only fined him that much because he's a superstar and a role model. If it were some no name player, he probably would have fined them $1000.

your example does not make any sense cuz Kobe did not go into a gay pride parade and throw around the term "fag"

i agree it was not the best example i could have made but i just wanted to compare two situations in which behavior perpetuates oppression against a minority group.

my point is that using such terms is harmful, even if the target/victim is not necessarily a homosexual or African.

Mining 04-13-2011 10:17 PM

Seems like a part of his decision to fine him that amount could have been because he has money and took advantage of this fine opportunity.
All in all, Kobe shouldn't have let himself be compromised.

So if Harper told Ignatieff to quit being such a nigger, it'd be ok?

dfo-mpo 04-13-2011 10:32 PM

kobe is a bit of a drama

Thanks for stating the obvious.

The NBA needs as much money from Kobe as they can possibly get considering how poorly that league is run economically.

white_guilt 04-13-2011 11:50 PM

Now all he has to do is buy that ref a huge diamond ring, and all will be well again.

bigG 04-14-2011 12:57 AM

If it would have been a TRIPLE DARE, I just might have done it :hotbaby:

Your example is garbage, therefore, so is your post. You can't use utmost extremes to prove a bullshit point.

If you go into this so called black community (I assume you mean the projects) and call someone a "fucking telephone" you will probably encounter the same result. Point? I guess you don't have one.

In fact you are missing the entire point. I don't think anyone in this thread is supporting what Kobe did; and they shouldn't. It should be the parents of the children who look up to Kobe watching the game who are pissed off. It shouldn't be the gay community.

Also, in case you know nothing about sports; athletes tend to get stuck in the high school mental development stage, at least when they are the court/ice/field. The sh!t that gets said on the other side of the glass during a typical hockey game would probably blow your mind.

Perpetuates oppression against a minority group? Yeah, I agree, I think this incident has really caused a huge step back in the Gay Rights movement. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if gay/lesbian marriages were banned because of it. If this is not what you meant, then please explain specifically.

Can you tell me how what Kobe did is any worse than calling the ref a "Fat Fuck."? Because if not, I think the other point being made in this thread is that 100k is a little ridiculous for a minor verbal temper tantrum.

Vansterdam 04-14-2011 06:13 AM

lol 100k aint shit to kobe

Oh noes, somebody fine that guy!

i guess you never heard of a double standard? we have double standards for everything, eg, normal revscene users can rag on each other but when they do it to a mod points are awarded. men are praised for being total sluts but women are condemned, etc.

in reference to the above examples, if we didn't have double standards, the population would be through the roof and a greater percentage of people with STDs, also revscene some revscene mods may not even want to be a mod without fail button immunity, etc.

etc, etc.

etc.

LiquidTurbo 04-14-2011 08:01 AM

So a homophobe, a rapist and a black dude walk into a bar...

Spoiler!

wasabisashimi 04-14-2011 10:30 AM

Again, money is none issue to kobe, but this shows what a great guy he truely is. A true champion. To kobe fans, keep on polishing his dick for him.

You ignorant hypocrite.
Let's assume, in the worst case, that someone using the word 'fag' means it in a demeaning way (even though usually they don't). They might look down on 'fags' because they don't agree with their worldview. Now you're looking down on them for not agreeing with your world view? Good job!

Or the opposite could be said that a non-double standard situation would be that men get called sluts too, reducing promiscuity not increasing it and then your STI argument would be debunked.

Well, the term "nigger" generally only has one concrete meaning (a disrespectful way to acknowledge an African person), where as the word "faggot" has more than one meaning. It's like Chris Rock/Louis C.K said, anyone can be a "faggot", not everyone can be a "nigger". This is why, when people say how would you like it if someone said, "man that's so.. Buddhist" doesn't apply because there is only one meaning to the word Buddhist. When calling someone a faggot, it has nothing at all to do with "gays", just like calling someone a "fine bitch" has nothing to do with the original meaning of the word bitch. It's just unfortunate that the word faggot just so happens to have this double meaning, but then again, so do a lot of words these days.

In this case, the gay community was acting like a "faggot", and condemning Kobe for the wrong reasons.

Don't get me wrong, like someone said, Kobe deserves to be fined for showing disrespect since he's a role model to thousands of kids (although anyone who's ever played 10 mins of sports in their life knows that this is normal on the court), but he's just being fined for the wrong reasons...

I could be wrong, but that's just how I view the term "faggot". Its about the context, not the word itself. The words "apple" or "chapstick" might as well have been used for the second meaning of "faggot", which is no different in my eyes.
