Wanna lower Gas prices? Do not buy Gas from Esso or Petro Canada (SUNOCO)

I got this long winded email about how to lower gas prices. Here is the idea;

Quote:

"Phillip Hollsworth offered this good idea.
This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May!
It's worth your consideration. Join the resistance!!!!

The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas! And, we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves.

How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas.

But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war.

Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), SUNOCO(PETRO CANADA) and ESSO.

If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. "
This idea makes sense to me. What do you guys think?

Full email here;
Spoiler!

lololol, i spend thousands if not tens of thousands in diesel for my fleet on a weekly basis and it all goes to either Petrocan or Shell/Flying J. Can't help here guise :(. Also, i dont think the creator of this idea understands how many millions of customers they have that won't ever see this lol.

rageguy 04-14-2011 09:51 AM

Shell 91 octane shouldn't contain an ethanol.

The people that start these retarded crusades that only work in their minds needs to find out how economics work, more specifically, Oligopolies.

You can't start a price war in this type of industry setup, this is NOT a perfect competition. You may as well threaten to hold your breath. /Facepalm

dachinesedude 04-14-2011 10:25 AM

Phillip Hollsworth is no economist thats for sure

haha. I was thinking of getting that save on more card to collect points when I get gas. Looks like it's pointless :lol

Welcome to 2006, OP.

Nightwalker 04-14-2011 10:34 AM

Want to save money on gas? Use less gas.

:(

Culverin 04-14-2011 10:37 AM

Want to save gas AND money? Get a good fuel injected scooter.

I use about $4-6 a week on gas. :hotbaby:

Phillip Hollsworth is an idiot.

1.) You'll never be able to convince everyone to boycott one particular company for no reason, solely for the fact of isolating one company.
2.) Even IF you can, as soon as more people go to the competitors, the competitors will raise their prices.
3.) Once the competitors raise their prices, the boycotted company will have a lower price comparitively, even if it's the same price as it has always been.
4.) People will flock right back to the boycotted company because they are cheaper.

Fail.

Ummmm......$.87 to .99 WOULD BE very cheap for a gallon of gas

:failed:

6insomnia9 04-14-2011 11:29 AM

Shell with airmiles :p

xyz123 04-14-2011 11:43 AM

Shell for airmiles for the win!
Subwoffers pretty much explained why it wouldn't work in an economical point of view. Gas stations will never start a price war against each other. Basic level 100 micoeconomics.

optiblue 04-14-2011 11:46 AM

Already doing this by buying Chevron 94 :)
