Well, today I found out my car was almost broken into, in my own underground parking. The driver side lock cylinder is missing from what looks like a shitty lock picking job. Besides the lock cylinder, the sheet metal is also dented in a little, and there's a crack in the paint. Just posting to get some opinions on my options. Should I just pay out of my own pocket? Or should I pay the $300 deductible and let ICBC handle this? (e46 M3) I don't know what to do at this point, since it's not something very serious, but at the same time this kind of shit really fucks with you... Thanks in advance for all your inputs!
If you get one of those little bottles of clear coat from Canadian Tire with either the pen type tip or a little paint brush...put some clear over the crack and that will prevent any metal from being exposed (and prone to rust) just to be safe. Then just get the keyhole delete to cover the lock and get those paint matched (could ask the paint shop to do the clear on the crack if you're not comfortable with the paint yourself)
That would be my choice as it's not worth paying the $300 for such a small little ding
I've seen a few m3's broken into this way. Not sure how hard they would be to drive off with at that point.
Really don't know just how effective the immobilizer in these cars are. My car has the factory alarm, but not sure if the motion sensor does anything more than just triggering the siren..
The E46's were notoriously easy to break into. It would also disengage the factory alarm. Get the keyhole cover. It will help alot. Depending what year your car is you should be able to order it straight from BMW. I just ordered the cover for the driver side passenger door of the sedan. I think it was an allen key. Took like 10 mins to do myself.
I don't really remember how much it costed me. I think $70. I could be wrong.
