THIS is one of the biggest issues that pisses me off. People have lots of money, they can buy nice things and houses, fine. I don't care where you come from, where your money came from, money talks--I understand that. But the attitude seems to be: these social systems and handouts are available to us, we would be stupid not to take advantage of them even if we don't need them. I wish these PRIVILEGED indivduals would understand that these systems, tax rebates, income assistance, are really there for the UNDERPRIVILEGED. As a middleclass worker, why should I be paying Mr./Mrs. Baller's Bently gas bills? Really not a whole lot different than when I was back in University and many of my friends, disguised as poor students on their grant applications, received large student grants year after year while powered by mom and dad and living at home. "My student grant paid for my new bling wheels and rubber! Next year I will get a new turbo kit with my student grant. FTW!!" Hey, maybe I was stupid for not claiming what 'should have' been mine. |
On the side note. I went around the open houses today on the Westside. More than half of the white agents who were showing houses had a partner who could speak mandarin. Just shows how many prospective buyers are mainlanders. |

http://english.cntv.cn/ http://english.aljazeera.net/ Not trying to sound patronizing, it's just my personal experience, the more I travel and meet people, the more I realize how pathetic and one-sided media in North America is. Vancouver is really a small town, it helps to experience the world. |
Its unfortunate that Canadian citizens don't realize just how powerful Industry can be. Rather then fight against foreign buyers of Canadian Property, why not create or expand our own Industrial base and get some more money back into Canada. Unfortunately most Vancouverites are going to probably vote in the NDP, which will further hurt Industry in BC. Under the NDP the Mines and Lumber Mills all shut down. At least now there is natural gas drilling, and mines open again. Side note, Vancouver is such a consumer market, and its strange how in New Brunswick I can buy houses the same as the British Estates in West van for about $370,000 ...not 1.5 million+ That said. Vancouver is very small, and would you believe about 20% of Las Vegas is owned by Canadians! |

In this case, I can't help but feel a need to complain over someone who openly dislikes certain ethnic group. Do you dislike Indians and Sikhs too? What about Muslims or Jews? Are Hong Kong and Taiwanese Chinese that much better? People are people, you will behave just like a mainland Chinese if you happen to be born there. |

But I fully agree that Vancouver is a huge consumer market, and it is only going to become moreso in the future and I'm not sure that's the environment I want my kids to grow up in. You can buy a nice house built on land measured in acres for 500k in Kelowna, raise a family in a 'simpler' manner, and have less of this general consumerism to contend with. But everytime I seriously contemplate a big move, things like lifestyle, family, and friends keeps me here in our little condo. And we consider ourselves very lucky and much better off than many others already. |
Before we start making foreigners learn English let's make sure everyone in Canada knows how to speak it first. You have people in Quebec that can't speak english. at least the Chinese are paying for there property unlike some people who just stuck a flag in the ground, said something about the Queen, and just took it. |

Secondly, The Chinese may be paying for territory, but much like Richmond, its a double edge sword. There is many places as a white 30 year old, I cannot get a job. There is Chinese communities that look after other Chinese, and in the Reverse Scenereo out here in Alberta, if I didn't hire someone that is of another skin color, the race card can be called. Third. I do like to see many hard working Chinese families that are 3rd-4th-and some fifth+ Generations here that HATE the FOB Chinese that are coming over here playing easy street. This tells me that the world in general is good, and people that work hard always hate the lazy aholes! :fuckyea: |
I wander how some of you guys don't know about lupolls http://www.revscene.net/forums/parki...s-t374197.html Noobs! |

UFO I know where you are coming from. It bothers me knowing that older people Immigrant to Canada, and only put in a few years of taxes, and get the same benefits as our parents whom has put in 65 years. |
I don't see why everyone is hating on the Chinese for trying to maximize their profits and financial potential...Yah it's upsetting if you are unable to afford a decent house of your choice...But anybody would do the same if they had the resources to do so. Those who are rather wealthy will use the real estate market as a means to continue growing their wealth. They have every right to do so. Those who sell to these Chinese buyers are also trying to maximize their profits...Do you think the sellers are also Chinese? No. It's either a buyers market or it's a seller's market. One group will be happy while another will be dissatisfied. It doesn't matter if you are from this country or from another, Vancouverites and Asians are both benefiting from this trend. Those who are selling their local homes are making more money than anticipated. Are you telling me that when you purchase your first home, you don't hope to make a large profit from it when you sell it down the road? Of course you do, it's an investment. This is why Business Reports have been constantly stating that the Asian population will be least affected by recession because instead of spending, spending, spending, they are investing and saving. If people are upset about these Asian's driving up prices of a real estate market, then the same people should be upset about rich people driving up the prices of decent Canucks tickets...The same theory applies...rich people are the ones who can afford those lower bowl tickets and rich people are the ones who are now making money off them by selling them for more money to OTHER rich people! It's how the world works... |
Isn't this the problem? We are turning back a 100 years of fighting for workers wages, rights etc (leading towards socialism) and now heading back to giving the wealth back to the top 1% and then voting conservatism in? |

I still don't get the choices some of you have with staying in Vancouver to live and work. Chances are many of you here work for a consumer business. If you are under hardship, the rest of the country is wide open for you. I use to live out there, and found it impossible to buy a house at my wages of $40k/year. So I moved to Alberta, less tax, and make 70-100 pending on how good the year is. I managed to get a 5 bedroom house in Red Deer for $330k, and have two renters with me. OPM = win. (also no ICBC here, and no Aircare either, so I can have fun with my cars without some pseudo green agenda that actually doesn't help the environment) Working in an area where there is lots of competition will not get you ahead of the Rat Race. So yeah, don't blame the Chinese for whats going on around you, either capitalize yourself, or move to a location where you can. Hence why before I mentioned about how 20% of las vegas property is Canadian Owned. Many Canadians took advantage of the US's problems. |
Free rent. or else you would see a mass exodus. our parents can live in those times... we can;'t |

Working in an area with lots of competition will not get you ahead? Why not? Those who stride to be the best ARE indeed getting ahead. You're basically saying, if you aren't good enough to compete, go somewhere else where there is less competition. Yes, that is good advice for those who know they are simply not qualified to succeed in a busy, advanced, growing metropolitan. But there are many of us who are doing just fine in this city and have no problem with this so called "rat-race." There is a reason why Vancouver has MORE competition than Red Deer...It is a much better place to live than Red Deer. You may have a 5 bedroom house with 2 renters giving you additional income but you certainly DON'T have the culture, the diversity, or the beauty of Vancouver. You cannot logically compare a shit hole like Red Deer to a beautiful city such as Vancouver. I have a double rancher in Vancouver that I had picked up for about $300K in 1994...It sits on about 1 acre and is central to all amenities including malls, government buildings and public transportation. Today, it is worth over $1.2 million...In fact, a Chinese church has offered to purchase 1/2 the lot for just under $1 million so they can expand the parking lot in their church. Meanwhile, as I sit in my home, my rancher is being rented out to two reliable tenants who have been with me for about 8 years now... I don't foresee that opportunity coming from your investment in Red Deer. You're talking about hating on "Lazy FOBS" who come to Vancouver and play it on "easy street" while hard-working people are getting nothing...What makes you think that these "FOBS" are lazy? Did their wealth come to them from the tooth-fairy? As far as I know, Chinese people/Asians have NEVER been stereotyped as "LAZY." If anything, they've been labelled as over-achievers...If investing into property in Vancouver is "easy," why are you not doing it? It's because you don't have the financial means to do so. Does that make you less of a man? Of course not. Does that make the Chinese "FOB" who can afford it lazy? Of course not. There is no difference between you and someone who pulls the race card when they don't get a job offered by a white person. You are not able to capitalize in the real estate market so you automatically assume it's because of the Chinese buyers instead of a lack of something on your part... |

Everyone wants stuff fed to them in an easily understandable format. That's OK. The problem is when ppl think they know what they're talking about based on what they see on tv or read on the news. With a few exceptions, media is a pretty shitty (they are lazy) source of information. Think about this: You're extracting reality from the lens of a headline + 300 words or 30 seconds, probably from some dude who wants to deliver before a deadline. How accurate do you think that is and how much of it is about telling a good story? |

I guess it's natural for people to be pissed off at the mainlanders. I think we should be more pissed off at the government selling BC off to the highest bidders. |
soo many pages.... wth... anyway these "policies" the lady in the video was speaking of is Beijings pledge to crackdown on corrupt officials and their families by restricting movement of $$ and arresting the thieves; think it was announced a couple months ago that they would start doing that |
