imo. having a desktop PC is a MUST. I can't stand using a Mac as a desktop for some reason? I need the PC as i'm so used to it.

But, I LOVE my macbook for school. It just feels and works great. Best laptop i've ever owned. And I don't need to worry about viruses. So I always stream/download videos/movies/porn on my macbook without worrying about my computer getting slow.

I think you can have the best of both worlds. Just don't count the mac out just yet.

I think u should re-consider the part about viruses. In some cases MAC is worse when it comes to virus protection.

Death2Theft 05-31-2011 09:31 PM

Funny my m11xr3 is refered to as a netbook it has everything this asus has and a better videocard.

A 10" notebook with real hardware in it like this Asus? That's not a netbook.

Netbooks are a class of laptop computers based on price, hardware and overall (lack of) capability...not because of their size, even though that's a factor.

Anyone who's been reading Slashdot recently would know how fast Mac viruses are evolving. They don't need user intervention to install themselves anymore.

Manic! 05-31-2011 10:27 PM

there is going to be a ton of these types of laptops coming out in the next year. It's a new a new Intel spec called Ultrabook.

the most expensive model right now is around $1500which isn't too bad. i7core 2.7G 8GB of RAM VIDIAŽ GeForceŽ GT 525M 2GB graphics with Optimus 750GB HD and 1080P WLED display.

Claims it can run for 8hours.

flagella 05-31-2011 10:35 PM

^8 hours? I doubt it.

So the people doing the referring would be wrong.

There are two general meaning of the terms netbook IMO. One is what you described earlier, and another is a broader term for any laptop around 12 inches and under.

Nice design from Asus but it look awfully like the MBA.
The Core i7 in it will probably be the 2 cores 1.7 or 1.8 to keep the heat down

As for Mac vs PC (software + hardware), I don't get why PC users always try to convert Mac users into a PC user. They also, always bash Apple's spec and price whenever they get a chance. It's not like people are using their money to get a Mac, so why so serious?

I would understand if people are shareholders and/or own a tech company that compete with Apple but I just don't get why consumers try to stop people from buying Apple?

And speaking from my experience some people only used Mac for 5 minutes and label it sucks just because the layout is different from Windows.

Mr.HappySilp 06-01-2011 11:57 AM

I find Window is a lot easier to troubleshot (work as a tech support). Vs Mac. It just seems ppl who uses windows have an easier time doing what I ask them to do. Also Mac like to do some werid things.

A common issue with Mac Mail I find is that for the out-going mail server port it likes to change to the delfault port even though the user have put a specific port. not sure why though.

Another issue with MAC Mail is that say you setup several E-mail acctounts and decide to delete one. All E-mails and contacts associate with that E-mail account will get deleted as well. This does not happen to Outlook or other E-mail programs.

Another thing is why does APPLE want to name their router Airport, or TimeCapsule? Just call it a router lol.

No one's stopping them from dumping money to Apple. We just laugh at some of the fools who are blindly buying any Apple products out there to be "cool".

!LittleDragon 06-01-2011 04:01 PM

As a shareholder, I encourage people to buy Apple even tho I wouldn't myself... lol, the only Apple product I have is an iphone 4 that I got through a Fido upgrade.

Some free AV for Mac:

ClamAV
Sophos

A good idea to scan your files if you bit torrent.

The UNIX kernel was designed with security in mind, but no OS is immune. This means that as Apple is being targeted more, some things will get through, but your advantage is that you have an OS that's naturally more resistant to these attacks.

Even if you don't bit torrent, it's still a good idea to learn about the social engineering tricks those guys are using to gain access to your system and to give your computer a scan once in awhile just to be non-ignorant of what's going on in your system.

That said, the hype with the Mac viruses so far are really overblown.

A lot of people think that but security analysts say OSX is the least secure of the major OS's. There was an article several years ago saying how OSX had 5x the security holes of XP and Vista combined, more recent articles say little has changed. The user base is now big enough for hackers to make it worth their while to hack. Think of the OSX user base as a small town where nobody locks their doors, it just takes a few baddies to rob them blind. At hacking competitions like Pwn to Own, OSX is usually the first to fall.

I have the same question. The laptop looks fantastic but I suspect it will have unthinkably bad battery life.

The part where he couldn't open it was funny.

Airport is basically their brand for their wireless products, encompassing shit like routers, wireless media streaming, Time Capsule (backup), etc. It's like how D-Link calls their shit RangeBoost or Xtreme or whatever. Linksys calls theirs a much more marketable and attractive WRT54G. It's just a brand or a model name.

lacubrious1 06-02-2011 07:26 PM

I have a macbook pro and desktop PC.

I don't give a shit about what other people use.
I don't think I'll ever use any new computer that I buy to its full potential.

It's not just branding. Apple knows that customers want. Most people don't care what hardware a computer has. They just need to know it runs well and lasts long. In terms of build quality apple has really set the standard with their unibody aluminum designs. Slap on the apple brand and an OS that everyone can use and they can price it higher than anyone else. Not trying to praise apple here or anything. In fact, I really hate the apple OS's since a lot of things are so restricted. But they're obviously doing something right for so many people to become loyal to their products.
