Fittest City in Canada is. . .

RICHMOND!!!

RICHMOND (NEWS1130) - Canada's obesity rate keeps going up but it's a different story for the City of Richmond. People there are considered the fittest in the country.

Just five per cent of adults are considered obese, compare that to the 35 per cent rate in northern Saskatchewan.

"We have some of the best walking trails in the world. You can walk all the way around the dike there is 29 miles of trails. We have well over 55 kilometers of bike paths," says City Councillor Bill McNulty.

Diversity in Richmond also plays a big role.

"You can start off in the morning at Minoru track and you'll see the same people walking around Richmond Centre Mall. You'll see Thai Chi out there, so you'll have other communities, ethnic communities doing exercises. You'll see people walking their dogs in dog parks. It cuts across all sectors of our community."

Mayor Malcolm Brodie says endorsing a healthy lifestyle has clearly paid off for people in his city. "What people eat how they eat and when they eat must be factors in terms of obesity and healthiness in general."

Been a while since Ive seen an obese Asian.

However I would say article is misleading.
Thin does not mean fit. Nor does it mean good health.

Chinese food, with chopsticks, "Siu Ye" (Midnight Snack)

Did they just base this only on the percentage of obese people in each city? That doesn't necessarily mean that we are the fittest lol

Jsunu 06-21-2011 12:01 PM

Yay something to be proud of in Richmond lol! Too bad it is just a study on % of population that is obese rather than overall fitness.

Is height to weight or age to weight considered? How was this comparison done?

rocksforsale 06-21-2011 12:37 PM

im pretty sure these kind of honger girls with twigs as limbs really skew the data

Exactly. The fact that they are using weight and only weight as an indicator of "fit" is just one big pure pile of FAIL.

There are plenty of obese asians. The thing is, being asians, they are typically smaller. So an obese asian person may only weigh 200 lbs at most, and may not have a huge double chin or giant arms (there are plenty of those around too, but not typically). Does that mean they are as "fit" as the guys in the bodybuilding thread who are 200-250 lbs but lean and ripped? According to this dumbcunt "study" it does.

gars 06-21-2011 12:40 PM

exactly. BMI is probably one of the worst indicators of health. I have a friend who is just naturally petite, but every time she goes to the doctor - she is told she is underweight.

BMI is different for every body type and is not an indication of health.

The news1130 write up is extremely misleading. The study was conducted by the Canadian Institute for Health Information and the Public Health Agency of Canada on obesity rates, not fitness levels.

Quote:

According to a joint report issued Monday from the Canadian Institute for Health Information and the Public Health Agency of Canada, one in four adults are now obese.

In Richmond, however, just five per cent of adults — one in 20 — are obese.
While the report doesn’t say why the community beats even fitness-crazy Vancouver, which stands at 6.2 per cent

I see them everywhere in Hong Kong. They are just generally smaller, and the obese body type is different. Just about every man here over 40 has what I have dubbed a "pregnant belly". Big, tight, round belly - a perfect indicator of early onset diabetes and heart disease.

That's more the 'city' crowd though. Now that I live in a rural area, I don't see it as much.

Exactly, if I strictly went by the BMI, I'm considered obese lol. I'm a gym rat and have more muscle mass making me weigh more than the average in my height group as per the BMI.

SkinnyPupp 06-21-2011 12:49 PM

Also "obese" has nothing to do with just being or looking "really fat". It has nothing to do with body weight or even BMI. All it means is, you are fat enough that it is causing potential health problems. So you could be 200 lbs and obese if you have a lot of visceral fat (the guys with pregnant bellies - liver disease, diabetes, etc) or 500 lbs and have the same problems (among others).

The data just counts obese people, not anorexics.

To be fair to the chinese people, there are a lot that still eat a lot and exercise a lot and are still twigs, so I wouldn't flame them and label them as anorexics and unhealthy. They just have different body types. I have noticed that a lot of private exercise facilities have opened in richmond in recent years and this (low obesity rate) may be a result of that.

Badminton courts in particular seem to have exploded around richmond recently

Chronix 06-21-2011 12:51 PM

and Asians have the highest count of having dialysis/kidney problems due to high amount of salt and MSG in their food. (Always see them in the hospital)

The_AK 06-21-2011 01:23 PM

just because you're NOT obese does not mean you're fit
