Been looking for the past month. No good deals unless you're going for this:

Any good deals recently? Just got hit and run, willing to spend under 150 on a good camera. Anyone know if its easy to hardwire the camera in yourself?

I've had this thing for a few months now and it works like a hot darn............

[Ultimate Dash Cam Battery] Cellink Battery B

Easy to install and it has never let me down.

It's like having an extra battery in the car. It charges up while you drive and your dashcam runs off of it, so you never have to worry about your car battery going dead while parked. I have both front and rear dashcams running off this battery.

The Powermagic does eventually fail, as I found out the hard way.
It went strong for 3 years, then boom. Dead battery.
Got a new one, and it's been fine for the past 6 months.

I'm not calling you a liar, but I don't know how it would fuck up your battery. The worse it could do is drain it a few times while you figure out what's going on, but draining the battery dead a few times shouldn't fuck it up (most of the time anyway, and if it did, i'd blame the battery.)

As with any electronic items, wear and tear. Especially if it's left on running for extended periods of time, the longevity won't last long if anything.

Mines ran fine for 1.5 years and then I noticed my dashcam stopped recording in parking mode, changed out the dashcam and works fine again.

In terms of messing up the car battery, not sure how it contributed because the dashcam is a low-voltage device...I ain't no electronics expert, maybe I'm wrong =/

My car was only a couple months old when I installed my Blackvue DRW550 with Power Magic Pro. Less than a year later my battery was no longer holding a charge, I ended up getting it warrantied through the dealer. The Power Magic Pro is supposed to prevent the battery from being drained and it failed miserably.

This is the reason why I went with an external battery and not a device like a Power Magic Pro that simply shuts off power to the dashcam when the battery's voltage goes below a certain value.

The heat warped my suction mount and the plastic part isn't flush with the suction part so it wobbles now. Still holds up though, so

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Did you have the PM set to 11.8 or 12v?

Check out the voltage chart here: https://dashcamtalk.com/battery-discharge-prevention/

Battery Charge
TEMP(F/C) 100% 75% 50% 25% 0%
7 -14 12.49 12.16 11.86 11.62 11.50
17 -8 12.51 12.18 11.88 11.64 11.52
27 -3 12.53 12.20 11.90 11.66 11.54
37 3 12.55 12.22 11.92 11.68 11.56
47 8 12.57 12.24 11.94 11.70 11.58
57 14 12.59 12.26 11.96 11.72 11.60
67 19 12.61 12.28 11.98 11.74 11.62
77 25 12.63 12.30 12.00 11.76 11.64
87 31 12.65 12.32 12.02 11.78 11.66
97 36 12.67 12.34 12.04 11.80 11.68
107 42 12.69 12.36 12.06 11.82 11.70

Note: I can't get it to format better, see the chart through the link.
A PMP only has 11.8, and 12v settings, so at our normal temps we see in Vancouver, it'll discharge your battery down to 50%-25% before cutting off the camera.

I have a Lukas 290, and I've got it set to 12.4v just to be safe.

is it just me or does blackvue have a craptastic track record for dying within a few years? I can understand if it's ebay trash but it's priced mid-to-high end in the dvr market

hope my lukas 290 voltage protection lasts longer than that

Aside from the Power Magic Pro completely draining my battery, my Blackvue camera has also messed up two Micro SD cards (the 16gb that it came with and a 32gb Kingston) to the point where it keeps repeating "Initializing the SD Card, please do not turn off the power" and my computer no longer recognizes them when plugged in.

No issues with the actual camera though but I do agree at this price point it should be a lot more reliable.

So, after a couple of close encounters the past few days, I've decided to buy yet another dashcam after my last one broke a a couple months ago. Waaaay too many different options out there, especially on eBay, so I'm looking to buy locally (well, Kamloops local... not Vancouver local). Best Buy has a few interesting options, but one that stood out to me was the Thinkware F750 dual channel.

Thinkware Full HD 1080p Dashcam with GPS, Wi-Fi & Speed/Red Light Camera Alerts (F750) : Dash Cameras - Best Buy Canada

Any thoughts on this? I know someone mentioned earlier in this thread (last year, I believe) that Thinkware isn't quite on par with the picture quality, but viewing video reviews seem to show pretty decent footage.

Worth the price for a dual camera system? Only real downside I can see from this is that it uses a proprietary power cord instead of the usual mini-USB most other units use, so that means I have to pull my current hardwiring out and replace it.

I was looking for a new dash cam recently too and seeing how these things only last 2-3 years max and are considered disposable, I decided to not spend too much from now on.

Price <$80CAD, form factor, size, and video quality are my main criteria in that order. I don't like the ones that hangs from the windshield. I ended up choosing the A118 and bought it from Aliexpress for $72CAD.

That looks pretty expensive for a dash cam, the video quality had better be mind blowingly good for that price IMO. Even then I'd rather buy a cheaper one and not worry about replacing it every few years.

I have this one as well, except I went with the capacitor version for a little more money. The form factor is nice, as it's relatively small, yet still has a display screen.

The video quality during the day is fine, but I've found that the nighttime quality is just "meh."

Like you, for the price, I like this camera.

Most people don't have a rear camera but I'd recommend one. A couple of months back a Ford Escape rolled into me at a red light in Vancouver. I pulled over and the lady turned into a side street and took off. I saved the footage from my camera immediately and got the plates from it.

After calling the cops, the RCMP pulled her over in North Vancouver within minutes. They said they couldn't see any damage on her Escape and she denied rolling into me so they had to let her go. A couple days later ICBC contacted her and again she denied hitting me.

I sent the footage to the officer taking my case and ICBC, she finally admitted to hitting me but claims I ran from the scene instead lol. If that was the case I don't think I would've called the police and ICBC.

Anyways she ended up getting a ticket for failure to stop and I didn't have to pay my deductible to fix my bumper. Without the rear camera I would've been out $300 for the deductible.
