I went mid November in 2015, and it was hot during the day (mid-high 20's) but cooler at night.

We went to Maui during Christmas, and NY last year. Weather was great, never rained once, was about 25 each day.

What do you guys think about car rentals for Oahu and Maui? Worth it or is transit good enough?

You'll need a car to get to the north shore (which is a must see)

Rent a car FOR SURE, especially a drop top Mustang (they're cheap as hell). You can't beat having a car on Maui or Oahu, you're able to see a bunch of different beaches, and tour the beautiful island. Definitely rent a car for a few days at least.

they don't have those tourist buses driving to north shore?...interesting,sounds like somebody could be making some decent coin during busy tourist season if they tried.

We always rented a car b/c we liked going to different parts of the island. The first time I went, we took transit and it was not as fun b/c it took longer

go to https://www.discounthawaiicarrental.com/

cheapest booking everytime I go. Plus it's a booking and you don't have to pay until you're there. You can just book it and look for anthoer deal later.

Decided to rent a car for the full duration of my stay on both islands.

What do you guys think about the Go Oahu Card? Is there anything similar on Maui?

Thanks

Those passes usually have good value if you go to most of the attractions and/or they're ones you're genuinely interested in trying. Otherwise, you're just tying up money in a pass that you'll be forcing yourself to use. Research the cost of the attractions you want to do, the time you'll be there, and if you'll realistically see most of them.

I just came back from Oahu with the wife and we had a great time. 7 Nights 8 days. We rented a mustang from enterprise and when we got there at 2pm they had rented out all the convertibles except 1 VW Beetle and a Jeep Wrangler which i was pretty disappointed because i wanted to drive a convertible. We ended up getting a Toyota Corolla which worked out great because it was super sunny there or super rainy so the drop top wouldn't have been that useful plus one night when we went to north side it poured so much rain that driving a Mustang would have been dangerous to drive. The rain that night was like someone spraying your windshield with the hose on full blast and you have the wipers on full and still barely seeing anything. We stayed at a Airb&b which was 2 blocks away from the main hotels. Our place had free parking and was a 5 minute walk to most of the tourist shopping and eating areas.

I will post what we did below so others can use it if needed.

- Lanikai Pillbox hike 265 Kaelepulu Drive ( pretty muddy/slippery because of the rain but awesome view once your at the top )
- Lanikai beach ( quiet compared to Waikiki beach )
- Pole Plantation 64-1550 Kamehameha HWY
- Polynesian Cultural Center 55-370 Kamehameha HWY ( Good Luau, full days worth of activities there )
- Diamond head hike
- Waikele Premium Outlets 94-790 Lumiaina St Waipahu
- Zoo
- Aquarium
- Hanauma Bay
- Waimanalo Beach ( Another quiet beach )
- Ala Moana mall

There is alot of shopping centers on Kalakaua Ave and Kuhio Ave with restaurants

Great food places we tried also is mentioned below

- Yogur Story ( Ube pancakes and prime rib loco moco )
- 53 By The Sea
- Cheesecake Factory
- Marukame Udon ( Long line up if you go during peak hours )
- Giovanni's Shrimp Truck ( 66-472 Kamehameha HWY )
- Yummys
- Nana's Green Tea
- Cafe MAIKO
- Manichi Ifudodo
- Red Lobster
- Egg N Things (Cheap good food)

For the ones who ended up renting a car in Waikiki, Oahu, what was your take on the rental car companys insurance? Is it worth it to just to pay for their LDW or get your own third party insurance coverage?

Thanks in advance and thanks for everyone providing their must do's and eats in Oahu.

Your visa card may have it already. I use the TD First Class Travel and it comes with full insurance coverage. Should try calling your own to see what's covered.

Budget charged me $150 for a chipped windshield years ago. I submitted the paperwork to TD insurance and received the money back in the mail. Later on in the year, Budget mailed a cheque for $85 because they found out that the damage is less. So technically I made some money.

Ldw is up to you. You don't have it on your own car so do you really need it for a rental? I didn't buy it., I rented for 7 days.

Went in October and the lists above are all very good. Definitely rent a car, don't stay in Waikiki because it's way too touristy. I used Priceline to rent the car, it was pretty cheap.

Hikes: Pillbox is easy and the view is gorgeous. Koko Head if you want to challenge yourself.
Shop: Ala Moana Centre is crazy big.
Do: Check out a Luau. Chief's Luau is quite funny.
Eat: Heavenly. It's not the usual tourist place. The food is so healthy tasting.
Drink: $1 beer and $7 sake at Shirokiya Japan Village Walk. Go with a big group, guarantee fun times.
