Just interested in everyones gaming habits/stories.
Back in my teenage days, I played lots.. probably a couple hours a day, sometimes all weekends if there was nothing to do.
These days, with work I don't have time for any gaming at all, except for some mobiles games occasionally on the iPhone.
Started gaming w/ the NES back in the day, then moved onto PC games, Hellbender, Jedi Knight, all those old school games, Age of Empires 1, etc. Then it was largely Starcraft for a number of years. Afterwards, a little Starcraft 2, and that's it.
What kinds of games do you play, and how often do you game?

how could i forget mario kart snes, endless hours playing that
Yep it started when NES was booming, then to handheld devices GBA, POKEMON! , then PC the first game i really got into was Counter-strike and starcraft.
Got an Atari 2600 when I was 5, also played Intellivision at my cousins' a lot, and Coleco at my friends place
Then we were really poor, and couldn't afford a gaming system. My sister's bf would always bring his NES over, and that's where I played most of my games until we finally bought our own, right after the SNES was announced.
Again, too poor to afford an SNES, right away, but I eventually got my own, and my brother even got a Genesis at the same time. Now that was an awesome christmas!
Started playing PC games at school of all places. Made a life-long friend too, and he went on to get his own PC, while I did all my PC stuff vicariously through him. Eventually he became a video game developer, and now works at google which is cool.
Sort of skipped the N64 at first, but did get a PS1. Modded it myself with a mod chip, and used to rent Japanese games all the time. This was probably the height of my video game geekness. Then I met my current wife, whose brother was 5 or 6 at the time, and was growing up on games himself. He had a Genesis and an N64. I brought my PS1 over a lot, and we played games together a lot, which was fun.
Then I kind of stopped playing console games completely. Skipped the PS2, except to play Gran Turismo and Final Fantasy VII (IIRC). I did have my own PS2, but sold it relatively quickly. I was still quite into PC games, especially shooters like Quake 2, 3, Team Fortress, etc.
Randomly got a Dreamcast, and started playing console games all over again. But then sold it, and went back to PC games.
Skipped XBOX 1 entirely, and Gamecube mostly, except for when I played with my wife's brother. Picked up things like a Gameboy Advance SP, but most gaming was done on console.
Then when XBOX 360 came out, I got back into console games, pretty hardcore. Picked up a PS3 as well. But I don't play either of them as much anymore. It makes no sense, when the experience is so much better on PC now. I did get a DS Lite and PSP, but barely ever played them.
The height of my addiction was halo3 online. all my non gamer friends ended up buying a 360 and we would all play online for a good few months, or at each others houses. Good times.
Now, I go through phases. Did a bit of COD:BO, NHL11, but havent turned it on for about 2 months now. Im sure NHL12 will get me hooked next for a lil bit.
Played a lot of video games growing up, both Console and PC.
Consoles:
Atari 2600
NES
SNES
N64
Played a lot of PS1 at a friend's house, but never owned one. Skipped gamecube, PS2, Xbox era.
For PC, played a lot of Wolfenstein, Doom, Rise of the Triad, Duke Nukem, Warcraft 2, Quake, Half-Life, Command & Conquer. Played a lot of those games vs via modem.
Teacher let me install ROTT on PC's in the drafting lab and we had epic 10 player LAN games on our lunch breaks. My home PC wasn't good enough to play starcraft when it first came out, so I never got into Battle.net or online gaming.
After high-school I pretty much stopped gaming, with the odd exception (Like Half-Life 2). Only just recently I bought a Wii for the new Mario and Donkey Kong(The only types of games my wife will play) and built a new gaming machine for Starcraft 2 which was kind of a let down. Tried the new Call of Duty games, but I'm more into the explorative FPS's than the narrow path regenerative health styles.
My first game was Seafox, a submarine game cartridge for the Vic20. And that was it, I was glued to the computer. I tried some Basic, but I liked playing games more than programming. I didn't have to type as much!
I really wanted an NES, but my parents wouldn't shell out for something that just played games, so my dad bought a new gen, white Commodore 64 with 1541-II floppy drive. That broke the seal for a world of games. I knew a lot of people with C64s, and copying games was easy with Fast Hack'em. I still remember a lot of the games: Space Taxi, Epyx Games (summer, winter, etc...), Impossible Mission, Maniac Mansion, 1949, Commando... It's all in boxed away in my parents' basement, now.
I remember begging my dad for a IBM PS/2, but they were really expensive. We ended up getting a 286 clone, and bought a math co-processor from Future Shop for around $300 bucks. My dad needed it for AutoCAD. The piracy continued with the 286: Wing Commander, Ultima, Simcity, Prince of Persia, Syndicate, Woflenstein....
Once I bought a Sound Blaster Pro, I was in computer heaven. Games that only beeped, now had substance. Shortly after, I got a 2400 baud modem, and had some fun on BBSs, playing online games, like Barren Realms Elite, Lands of Devastation, and the Pit. I recall a time where my friend's BBS played BRE against other BBSs, and he came up with a plan that would maximize our income, and allow for Gooey Kablooies to be deployed daily.
We've had some consoles: NES, SNES, Genesis, and Dreamcast, but the computer was still my weapon of choice. Without gaming, I don't think I'd know nearly as much about computers as I do today. You learn a lot when you pirate games.
MS-DOS
China-cloned Nintendo Famicom with disk system drive
Original Gameboy, loved this thing
regular PC gaming from here on
Wii (softmodded for old school games on the SNES, N64, etc)
PSP
PS3
I was really behind the times during the PC gaming era. Everyone had PS2 while I was playing old NFS games on my parents computer for hours on end. I didnt play as much during the first couple yr's of high school, but after I built my first gaming computer I really got into PC gaming.
-First got introduced to gaming with a Sega Genesis. Played the shit out of it until it broke.
-Moved on to the PS1 and Gameboy Pocket which is when I started really getting addicted to gaming.
-Bought a Nintendo 64 which I was one of the best consoles I've (or my parents, rather) invested in. It survived all the way until my high school graduation and only left it when I moved away for college. Super Mario 64 ftw!
-Bought a PS2. Brilliant console, 'nuff said.
-Bought an Xbox 360 where I play the majority of my games up until today. This is where I got addicted to multiplayer games with friends like Halo 3, Gears, Modern Warfare 2, Halo Reach, Black Ops, etc. And eating up endless hours on single player games such as Mass Effect 1/2, Fallout 3/New Vegas, Bioshock 1/2, GTA, Red Dead, etc. etc. etc. etc.
-Friend sold me his Wii for cheap. Mario Party/SuperSmashBros/Mario Kart were the bomb for party games.
-Finally bought a PS3 for the exclusives (Uncharted 1+2, Heavy Rain, God of War, etc.) and bluray.

It effectively ran my life from 2nd-3rd year university. Failed a couple of courses.
I decided it was time to quit. At least 10 times. Each time I uninstalled Dota, I ended up reinstalling it a couple days later saying to myself "I'll only play for a bit". It was like going through withdrawal.
Then the day I ACTUALLY quit, that following term was my best ever. Pulled out 2 A's in my classes. I havn't looked back since
God damn I was an addict

[23-07, 02:03] shawn79 do u go to vietnamese places for haircuts
Apple IIe - Karateka, Donkey Kong all the old school games
Some PC clone - ah remember the turbo button? it went from 33mhz to 66mhz
Another PC but now with a 28.8 modem - the beginning of network gaming from warcraft2 to my craving for starcraft
PC gaming from then on. So many games I loved:
Age of Empires (part 1-2, 3 sucked)
Age of Mythology
Civilization
Counter Strike (my one and only FPS . . . literally felt sick playing this on my first week)
FFXI
Starcraft
Starcraft 2 (my current game)
Warcraft 2 and 3 (huge let down for me)
I was never allowed to buy a console. But by the time I could, I was never really into them. Parent's were probably right though. If I had gotten it my grades would've probably fallen off the cliff. Starcraft and FFXI owned me for oh so many years.
N64 is the first system I ever played. I played with my family friends until I moved a year or two later. We used to play Sonic together.
Dreamcast was another system that I didn't bother playing that much since it was modded but the games were harder to get back then.
PS1 was bought by my father for my 4/5th birthday. Played on it for a while and then sent it to my nephews in Red Deer, Alberta.
PS2 was brought over from Vietnam which was modded and could play any game. Just burn it on a disc and place it in the drive. Worked great played for a couple of years with friends.
XBOX played for one day and returned.
XBOX 360 just recently gotten from Telus' offer for signing up with them and recieve a free XBOX 360. Plugged in with a Hi-Def projector and everything is good.
PS3 is mostly used for Blue-Ray and Netflix. The only use. Except it's on a 60 Inch TV.
Wii is useless. Bought for Wii Fit that's about it.
Nintendo DS was used with a R4. so I played basically all the games that were out there at the time.
PSP was modded so I could play any games as well. Loved Tekken 6.
PC is the thing I play with the most. Since I just recently bought my computer for 600 ish plus tax. I got a quad core w/ 6 gb of RAM. ATi HD 6850 is my graphics card so it runs smoothly and beautifully.
Games I play: Team Fortress 2, League of Legends (Over 100 hours logged), HoN, Maplestory, Soldier Front, Call of Duty BO (Over 108 hours logged), and almost any FPS games.
If anyone wants to play LOL with me, add me XinLoiFvr (level 26) been at summer school so haven't had time to play.
Counter Strike 1.6 was a big part of my life. Played some tournaments. Pretty fun overall.
Consoles
- Started playing bubble bubble/mario on NES ( but not my era)
- Switched to Super Nintendo, where I spent hours playing Super Mario
- Got a PS1/PS2 and I played a lot of Gran Turismo and other games
- Got A WII and it was fun at first.. got bored of it eventually and now it is collecting dust
PC
- Was addicted to Runescape, and played hours each day.
- Was also introduced to CS 1.5/1.6 during elementary and loved it. I played everday, and easily became an addict. Although I quit during the middle of HS, I still play on/off ocassionally. Sadly, CS 1.6 is dying right now, but CS 1.6(not source) will always be the BEST FPS game in my opinion.
- After CS I played a lot of GUNZ as well. Haha I remember my hands/fingers used to hurt playing this game. I eventually quit because I got bored, and didn't like the fact people who bought items had a huge advantage over you.
- DoD (Day of Defeat) In between CS and other games, I played this game for awhile. Another great FPS that I enjoyed playing. Unlike CS, I think it is an underated game that nobody knew about. Sadly, I don't think the game got picked up, even with the release of DOD:S.
- Maplestory- I spent hours of grinding and grinding..
- DotA played a lot during HS, and will buy DotA 2 when it comes out.
- TF2 fun game to play with friends, but I got bored of it quickly.
- SC1 I was a complete noob, and only played fastest mostly. This got me to buy SC2 though, which I still play currently.
- Battlefield Bad Company 2 I bought this game on sale with my friends for $5. It was fun at first, but we eventually got bored of it and quit. Based on this game.. I don't think I will buy battlefield 3.
My serious gaming life started and still now continues with Street Fighter
When I first saw Street Fighter 2, it was at Lazer Illusions arcade at Brentwood Mall, and it was already at Battle 99.
I didn't actually get good at Street Fighter until my bro and I bought Super Street Fighter 2 on SNES
Then I played a lot of KOF especially KOF'98. I still love that game. My friend and I used to have "wars" at the UBC arcade against other players.
I still play SF on a competitive level now, but I don't really like SF4.
I'm counting down the days until 3rd Strike is re-released on PSN and going to play that to death and try to restart a scene locally.
I've got tons of SF comics, artbooks, I used to have figures, everything.
I went to Sakuracon this year and got some of my comics signed by Jo Chen, cover artist for a lot of the comics
I also play Monster Hunter a lot. I started on Tri, for the Wii. I like it a lot, but I consider myself an amateur. I see a lot of the guys online who are REALLY GOOD.
I never really got into RTS, although I do like FPSs (Doom 2) and I like Diablo, but I was never really too good at them.
Started off with Gameboy, Genesis, SNES, Saturn, PS1, N64, Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, PSP, Xbox360, PS3, Wii, NDS.
All of my consoles are still working with the exception of the Genesis and SNES, since they were already given away
Games that I remember playing a lot on the system...
Genesis - Sonic, NHL, Mortal Kombat
SNES - Dragon Ball Z, Street Fighter, Mario Kart
it was the best back in the days, could play non-stop every weekend with friends!
Saturn - Lunar Silver Star, Marvel VS Street Fighter, SF zero, Virtual On
The controller was perfect for fighting games! Everyone had a Playstation, I had to buy a Saturn to play games ppl didn't have!
PS1 - Gran Turismo 1,2, Final Fantasy 7,8,9, Resident Evil 1,2,3, DDR
Didn't buy a Playstation until Gran Turismo 1 came out. The console was pretty old by then.
N64 - Starfox 64 and never touched the system again
Got it on Japanese launch, paid a lot for it and it sucked
Dreamcast - Power Stones, Virtual On OT, Shutoko Series, RE Code veronica, Virtual Tennis, House of the Dead
Probably another console where my friends and I spend the most time on! Also brought on the Japanese launch. So I had it months before anyone else!
PS2 - GT3,4, FF10, Battle Gear 2, Onimusha series, Kaido series, Dead or Alive 2, God of War series, GTA series
Paid $1200 CAD for the Japanese Launch model. its still working after 11 years!
Xbox - Dead or Alive volleyball and hacked it into a media center
Got it cause it was cheap. Paid $99 for it when it was retailing for $299 or something.
Gamecube - RE 0, RE remake
Brought it off RS just to play RE remake on it
PSP - GT mobile, God of War
Brought it on North American launch. Hardly ever touches it
Xbox 360 - Left 4 Dead 1/2, Forza 2/3
Brought it on North American launch. It was probably the best console I've gotten so far.
Got about 5 of these in different location now.
PS3 - GT5, RDR, GTA4, killzone, etc, PS2 games
Brought it on North American launch, finally allowed the PS2 to retire as the original PS3 plays PS2 titles. FF12 and God of War 2 was actually played using only the PS3 as they were PS2 games released After the PS3!
Brought 7 PS3 systems by now! with 2 of them are launch 60GB and the rest are slim.
Wii - Wiisport
Brought it on North American Launch, it was fun at first only
NDS - Nintendogs
Brought it to play Nintendogs only.... I don't even remember where I put it now...
iOS - Bejeweled, Plants vs Zombies
iphone.... probably the best portable gaming system at the moment!
PC - Couterstrike, FFXI
the only games that I actually spent time on!
Why did the ever get ride of the arcade at UBC SUB lol
if people don't have the willpower to go to class, it's their money they are wasting.
It's always nice to have some options for long breaks between classes
Yea, it's too bad that it's gone. Even though the games were relatively expensive to play, it had a lot of great players because of the FOBs playing KOF with us.
I almost forgot - I still have an Apple IIe down in my basement. It works, and my family used to use it for business.
If any of you still have a 486 running, I strongly suggest you play 4D Sports Boxing.
SO. MUCH. WIN.
As for game systems, for me it was
NES, Gameboy, SNES, Dreamcast, GC, then emulators and stuff, and then straight to PS3. My family never owned a PS1, PS2, or XBOX
Started with Coleco. Games of note are Ladybug, Looplane, Baseball (with special controller) and Burgertime.
Then came NES. Lots of time spent on Zelda and all the Mario's. Also Megaman and Metroid. Ivan Thompson's Super Offroad got lots play as well as Excitebike!
Super NES brought me Mariokart. I had my name published in Nintendo Power Magazine for fastest lap time on Mario Circuit. The movie "The Wizard" was the best movie ever.
PS1 and PS2 brought me Gran Turismo. For a car nut it was the best game EVER! So many fucking hours spent on getting just 1 gold license test. I had all Gold in every one I've played so far.
Then I got an 360. Bioshock rocked my world, NFS Shift was pretty badass but other than that nothing really stands out for me. I fucking HATE playing FPS games on console and here's why.
PC gaming introduced me to FPS's. Started with Quake and Duke Nukem. Spend many many hours blasting bad guys. Then they introduced "multi" player and you would have to call up a friend on dial up and do battle one on one. Lots of fun times there and many tied up hours of phone lines.
Then a game came along that changed my gaming life. The words "Anomalous Materials" literally brought to a whole new gaming level. Half Life was the best game ever of it's time and from there came .... COUNTER STRIKE.
I became an Elite CS player, got on a Clan, got sponsored and even went to a few Mass Lan events most notably Fragapalooza twice. Jesus Christ I couldn't tell you how many hours I put into CS. I would spend allllll day playing and then all night. Cost me a GF, a Job, and several years of my life. I was completely Addicted to CS. Would I take it back? Hell no I just wish gaming was as profitable then as it is now! lol.
When Half Life 2 came out it demanded an upgrade in equipment. It was just one of many of the 2nd gen games that were coming out and requiring way more RAM and computing power. So I decided that was my time to get out of online gaming. Never upgraded my RIG and to this day I still don't have a PC.. just a shitty little Netbook for surfing the interwebs on.
The only game I was really into was Starseige: Tribes back when I was 13. Shit fucked me up; I'd come home after school and essentially play until bed time.
I've always been into gaming for since Atari. Nintendo was the one that set the standard when I was a kid.
If I find a game I really like I tend to play it ALOT, usually multiplayer games.
Fave games that I played til the end
Leisure Suit Larry!!!
Super Mario series
Lifeforce
Punch Out
Goldeneye
Counterstrike (way back when it was a HL mod)
Command and Conquer
Diablo 1 and 2
GTA series
Forza 3
BF2
BFBC2
My gaming is inconsistent nowadays. Sometimes weeks on end I'm into a game, sometimes for months I won't touch a single game cuz I'm too lazy and cant deal with the mental exhaustion. LOL
When I was at 6, MS-DOS
at 8, NES,
at 10, SNES
at 13, PS1 (bought it for FF7) , GameBoy, SEGA Game Gear.
at 14, Sega Saturn, Also, skip classes play Arcade like KOF94,95,96,97...till 2000
at 17, DreamCast,
at 18, PS2
After I got Pentium 2 ....I played "Red Alert" like no tomorrow.
then, Diable,...StarCraft, -->Quake III -> Diable II -->
Counter Strike <- Very dangerous game....you get addicted to death.
I still play it often CSS...my steam id is only 4 digits...lol
