Best Hot Dog ever? Hot Doug's in Chicago

So, I'm a big fan of Anthony Bourdain, and his TV show No Reservations, so sometimes there are things on his show that look so tasty, they look like a must try.

Case in point, another old thread I did a while ago about Roast Pig:
http://www.revscene.net/forums/61572...pig-world.html

This time, it was this place.

Watch this for context:

Foie Gras Hot Dog? Fries deep fried in PURE duck fat? What's not to like?????

So I went to Chicago to check this place out.

Holy shit, I found it!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-J...4/DSC_5048.JPG

Some lame ice cream truck trying to milk the success of the line up. But dog damn, the LINE UP! (of locals!) :okay:

Line up... took about 1hr to get to the order.

So close, yet so far....

Here he is, Doug himself, a super nice guy, perfect ordering experience. He really knows how to take care of his customers.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-D...4/DSC_5036.JPG

Pricing, so reasonable!

I got the Classic Dog, (only 2$?) and loaded it. Also got the Foie Gras Duck Hot Dog.

There are no words to describe the flavor and experience of eating these hot dogs... Simply AMAZING, is the word I would be using. The Foie Gras was melt in your mount delicious, and the regular hot dog was just AWESOME. It's hotdog perfect, I loved it, and I'm not even a huge hotdog eater back home.

And the fries... the fries.... :sweetjesus: :sweetjesus: :sweetjesus: :sweetjesus: :sweetjesus:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-g...4/DSC_5037.JPG

The fries in pure duck fat are only available on Fridays and Saturdays. Luckily today was Saturday, so I got to try this goodness. They are orgasmic. Already back in Vanouver, but man, I miss them already.

Other happy customers.. LOL @ the dude w/ the Hot Dog hat...

If you are ever in Chicago, it is TOTALLY worth checking out this place. And the lineup is full of locals, I was pretty much the only guy with a camera. It's a little hard to get out to unless you have a rental car, but hey, that keeps the tourists away unless they are really hardcore and want to make an effort to get out to this place.

Suck on that, Japadog! I never ever thought I would wait 1hr for a hot dog, but man, I would do it over and over and over, if I could easily access this place.

This is Hot Dog PERFECTION. 10/10.

I have a tub of duck fat at home.
I'm going to making fries for sure. :D
Then drizzle it with a bit of white truffle oil.

murd0c 09-11-2011 04:16 PM

I need to shower to cool me down after seeing that.....

LiquidTurbo 09-11-2011 05:07 PM

^ what got you all riled up? :D

unit 09-11-2011 05:34 PM

I had hot Doug's and got a shirt too. the foie dog was the best ever but don't get it twisted, cause the plain hot dogs with everything for like 2 bucks are amazing!

hal0g0dv2 09-11-2011 08:44 PM

holly shit
epic

bd0n 09-11-2011 10:00 PM

best part of review....

"suck on that japadog"

BlackZRoadster 09-11-2011 10:15 PM

OMG the prices are so damn cheap, they should charge double of what it is since they are so famous.

Seems the menu is $2-$4 for a hot dog, even if it's not good , it deserves a lineup for being cheap!

LiquidTurbo 09-11-2011 11:38 PM

^ Almost all hotdog stands sell cheap hotdogs that price...?

Is there anywhere in Vancouver that sells hotdogs remotely close to the Chicago Dog in above pic?

Bonka 09-12-2011 12:07 AM

Outside of places like Japadog, Dougie's Dog, etc and this one place on Commercial Dr. that makes their own sausages (Falconetti's I think) we've got shit, and those places don't even come near Doug's.

In truth, Vancouver's food scene is pretty pathetic when put alongside another city; street food types like this as a prime example - where we gush over Japadog and the stand in front of Futureshop.

Great review though, I'm going to keep this in mind :)

Meowjin 09-12-2011 12:29 AM

japadog fucking sucks. They all get there sausages from the same source, like everyone else in the city.

for a while i use to come to rs to find credible info on where to eat, but i had to remind myself that this site is loaded with 19 year olds who think sushi garden is 10/10

ShadowBun 09-12-2011 12:35 AM

to be fair.. I would buy japadog if it were $1.99

SkinnyPupp 09-12-2011 05:01 AM

I would never line up for 1 hour for FOOD. Especially a hot dog of all things... :fuckthatshit:

yeah all hot dog stands, the bad ones, the no name ones too. What i mean is, this place is so famous and on tv, they should be charging double the prices.

Just like Tojo's, oh its just sushi, do you think they should charge $1 piece as well?

some people just appreciate food you just cant get anywhere else.

i would never line up for bad or mediocre food just because its cheap (stephos, antons...), but lining up for something you're not gonna get elsewhere is a whole different thing. that said if food is just fuel for you and otherwise meaningless, then im not sure why you're reading this forum.

unit 09-12-2011 09:13 AM

heres my pic of pretty much the same meal.

i went back a few days later and had another foie, and 2 more dogs.. skipped the fries.

Same reason people line up for clothes, electronics, games, conventions--all pretty useless things right?

I'd line up for good food over any of those other items on sale--but that's what makes me a food enthusiast and not just somebody else who thinks food is just food and a dog is a just a dog.

Yup exactly. Useless. Only time I ever line up for something is when I have no other choice. IE lining up for immigration, airports, etc. The other stuff is just trivial shit. I love food too. But if there is somewhere I want to go that is really trendy and has huge lineups, I don't mind waiting a few months until the hype dies down. There's plenty of good food around, no need to waste an hour lining up for one place :)

Yesterday I was at the mall and saw a lineup at a new store called "Hollisters". A fricken jeans and t-shirt store, and people were LINING UP for it. :seriously:

Since LiquidTurbo made a specific trip for this restaurant, I understand waiting. I can't imagine being a local and waiting for an hour to get into that place...

I'll never wait more than 30 minutes for a restaurant seat, I'll just find another restaurant with one exception, and that's Brasserie L'Ecole here in Victoria.
It's basically the best fine dining restaurant in Victoria (which unfortunately are few and far between), and it was me and my wife's anniversary. Plus they take your cell phone # down and call you when your seat's ready so you can leave and have a few drinks elsewhere or enjoy the Fringe festival for a bit (as my wife and I did that day).

Funny someone mentioned Antons. I have a buddy that loves that place and thinks the food is amazing, I tell him he doesn't have a clue about food.

Exactly. I made a trip out here to check it out, so I was committed to waiting. It really isn't that bad. Most that people that go are with friends, so really, everyone is chatting and have a great time before the anticipation of an awesome meal.

It's not like you can find something similar somewhere else with no waiting, this ain't no McDonalds.

Its not a new restaurant, so the hype is over its just straight up busy. Probably wouldn't be as bad if you went in at an odd hour though.

Liquid: How did you get there? Not really a stroll from downtown unfortunately.

unit 09-12-2011 11:42 PM

i went around 930am and was first in line both times, but just barely.
door opens and you've only waited 30m.
ride the L to california and take a bus or two, so its not easy to get to.
hopefully you're with 2 or 3 friends and can split a cab.
