We went for 2-weeks and it was amazing, the weather was perfect since it wasn't too cold or hot. Felt like a perfect Vancouver Summer weather.
Where did you stay at Kawaguchiko? We stayed at Ubuya and highly recommend it, Mt Fuji came out during our stay too!

I debated going to Gero onsen, but it was just way too rushed and we didn't think we would enjoy it with the kids.

In Kawaguchiko we stayed at the Ooike Hotel with a mountain view from our room. Got super lucky because we were only there for one night and the weather was great other than being windy and a bit cloudy. Got plenty of photos with the mountain. Next morning it was rainy and cloudy the whole day and couldn't see shit.

I don't think a lot of people realize how visibility of Mt. Fuji is very unpredictable.
You could spend thousands for a nice ryokan with a private onsen and all the jazz, but you might not see shit the entire time!
Glad you were able to enjoy it.
I opted to possibly see Mt. Fuji from the Shinkansen on my way to Kyoto instead, lol.

When I went last October, I stayed at a Ryokan. Rooftop view was amazing. Butt, it was cloudy. By midnight, it started to clear. Early morning it was clear. Nice!!!! Except, no snow on the peak. W - T -F ????? On the way back to Tokyo, I decided to take a bus, instead of train or Shinkansen. Wow, best option next to driving.

I'll have to ask him, but I think he stayed mostly in whatever urban area he was in.

Wow, best option next to driving. | Big regret for us was to not rent a car and drive. The train from Nagoya to Takayama was supposed to be a scenic train and it was cheap relative to renting a car. TBH it kind of sucked.
I wish we drove to Takayama instead.

I was there in March 2024 and planned to train from Tokyo to Osaka, but my kids didn't want to waste time on the train so we ended up flying. We sat on the right and didn't see Mt. Fuji...

Otherwise id suggest renting a car, driving around, lots of awesome places to see including beaches.
Would i go back? No. Mainland Japan? Yes.

How could taking a flight be faster than the Shinkansen? You have to lug yourself to the airport, check-in 2 hours before, then find your way from the other airport etc. Total time wasted is 5 + hours. You can get from Tokyo to Osaka in 2.5 hours flat by Train.

Haneda airport wasn't that far from where we stayed and I definitely did not check-in 2 hrs before the flight... The flight was just 1 hr and cost about the same as taking the bullet train for the 4 of us.
I think your 2.5 hr estimate is optimistic... I stayed at Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku in Tokyo and Holiday Inn in Osaka Namba. Google maps says the journey would take 3.5 hrs by train.
Side note, my sister said her kids experienced motion sickness on the bullet train.

Fine
Slammed Prius V in Nagoya, I gave the guy a thumbs up and he smiled back with a nod.
Had to look this one up, Alfa 145 Quad
Just a cool K truck
Random FD in Takayama. Takayama had a huge thriving car scene.
Top of Nagoya
Toyota safety concept at the Toyota Commemorative Science Museum, I thought it was pretty cool
Old sprinter at the musuem
Crash test displays
Engine and tranny from 1st gen Corolla. The output end was so small that my arm was roughly the same girth.
Random unobtainium in Ueno
There's videos too of the displays in the musuem. I wasn't there for car culture and most of the time the cars passed by too quick for me to catch them
