The funny thing about that proposition, is that it probably cost tens of thousands of taxdollars, for a bunch of people to discuss a solution to car theft, and somehow "take away licence" was the outcome
Canada is the definition of soft

Short of locking up all the car thieves that are caught, what would be a practical and viable approach to reduce car theft?
On an individual level, I'm totally putting an AirTag in each and everyone of my cars. But at the gov policy and police enforcement level, I'm not sure what can be done to effectively and meaningfully reduce car theft. You can have the usual stuff like bait cars, increased priority on car theft crackdown, but the only somewhat meaningful change that I can think of is federal bail reform so that our judicial system is less of a revolving door. But if you were to do that, then we'd need to dramatically increase our dentention / correctional facilities' resources (which I am not necessarily against).

The only upside I can see is they can also be charged for driving without a license the second time around? How big of a fine is that in Ontario?

I got the email as well, $7.86 is hilarious.
I wonder how much those lawyers at KPMG got paid on this suit.

But having the average price at $68k is wild.

From my understanding, very few people (customers and dealerships) wanted those cheaper new cars in the past.
For customers in that price bracket they either (using a Honda Fit as an example):
- went with a lightly used nicer car for the same price (i.e. purchased used Civic instead of a Fit)
- went with a reliable used nicer car for less money (i.e. purchased a lease-return Civic)
- went with a next-sized model and stretched the loan payment (i.e. financed a Civic instead for nicer amenities with a longer term)
- stretched the budget for a comparable SUV that's slightly more expensive (i.e. went for a HRV instead)
- leased instead of purchased to get a nicer vehicle (i.e. leased a HRV / Civic for not that much more per month)
I also believe dealerships / OEM played a role with this. Dealerships / sales:
- encouraged leases on a more expensive vehicle for a future sale and used vehicle supply (if the customer qualified)
- encouraged leases on a more expensive vehicle because there are better margins for both the store and the salesperson
- sold customers a used vehicle instead because the margins are higher vs. a new cheap car
- needed / wanted to increase the ratio of leases to sales to meet some OEM / auto group objective
I remember conversations with dealerships in the past where stuff like Yaris and Fit just sat and sat and sat without a buyer. Most people who went into the dealership looking for those cars ended up going one model up since it wasn't that much more when leased or financed.

Top 3 selling "cars" in Canada are the full size pickups so I assume those are what drive the high average prices. Pretty easy to get into 6 figures with a pickup. The Ram 1500 Tungsten trim starts at $112k.

Honda Odyssey/Toyota Sienna was way far out of budget. I'm pretty sure the 2015 Honda Civic in my avatar was the most expensive vehicle they've every purchased, considering the other family vehicle was a 2002 Pontiac Montana base model, also purchased brand new.

at least you can track their whereabouts and if you see them out and about in a parking lot or in da streetz at night maybe escalate the punishment?

Make sure you put the air tag in a spot that isn’t easily found.
I’ve been so tempted to get some bicycle and toss an air tag in the frame and just track it to see where it goes once it’s taken lol
People online also open them up and pull the speaker out because if they have a phone that senses the tracking, you can make it beep in order to find it. Can’t do it without a speaker

Ohhh that’s a brilliant idea for the car AirTag. I do have one in every car so it would make sense to take out the speaker.

I am looking at it because of 5% tax only, and a brand new one is something like 120k out the door, so it's a pretty big saving.
My mom is of the mindset that you should buy new cars. I'm the only one in the family that has ever bought used cars, and 3 of them as well, this would be the 4th. She's asking me why I'm not buying new. I'm like.... I can almost squeeze in a whole Rav4 Hybrid in the price difference......
