URGENT! need new tires for rain/dry performance
 

I will need all the options I can get! my current tires are no good in the rain going around corners even at 50-60kms which starts to hydroplane. I am tight on budget so I need something very affordable that gives medium-high performance and tire size is : 225/40/18. Not sure what brand or how to tell if a tire has good traction in the wet. Need them ASAP! thanks in advance guys!

Dunlop Star Specs are probably one of the best wet performance tires you can buy. They aren't expensive, but they aren't cheap.

I'm very happy with my Sumitomo HTR-ZII. I still slide and spin the tires occasionally when I am not paying attention, but that's to be expected on a RWD car. Never had an issue with understeer in dry or wet.

Got a good price from Image in Motion for my 255/45/17s

currently i am looking at these tires, but they have mixed reviews.. people say they are bad in rain, some say they are good.

DWS is confirmed as a great performer in all weather. It will also be quieter and ride better...

hmm its a bit pricey though. Heard the falken are good except that the tread life is bad. i just dont want to make a mistake buy bad tires again. Sorta installed them on my rims for me when i purchased and would not let me refund them.

I've had good experience with my Hanhook V12's
low profile as well.. 35 series front and 30 rear... they have good rain traction

how much do they go for? good quiet ride and comfortable?

well with coilcovers and exhaust I wouldn't be able to notice the how quite they are, or comfortable
but compared to other tires they do good in the rain.
my set was $820 shipped to Washington... 19".

i've had the falkens before. they sucked.

The V12s are a very good option. I had them on last season and drove until it snowed last year. Gripped both wet/dry.

Have these on a RWD car ... even drove it upto SFU burnaby when it was snowing bad and didn't get stuck and they have really good grip in the wet from what I've experienced.

agreed, DWS' are really good tires for all conditions for a reasonable price - i drive a FWD car, but i've never noticably understeered in aggressive driving

and Sorat (sponsor) has them for a great price too as his includes install (don't know about pricing for your size though but as i recall for mine they were between tirerack and 1010s pricing) I would have gone with Sorat but he needed at least a week to get my size in

how are you guys on today's practical rain course out there with your tire choices? Do share your experience.

My experience: Pzero Nero with maybe 30% tread. Hella slippery but surprisingly not as slippery as RT615s I used to have back then, but still slippery. But I think the balance between wet-dry handling on the Pzeros are quite good for their price. They go for rather cheap on the second hand market.

For a FWD car It wouldn't really matter what tire you go with.
Some FWD cars I've driven during snow in the winter had summer tires... they did just fine.

For a RWD its another story.

Not true. I've had many brands of tires on my old FWD car.
Some were good, some were horrible.

Considering there's FWD cars that are pushing almost 300 horsepower stock, I think FWD tires are pretty important.

Falken FK's. Hands down.
They have almost the same performance as the Toyo proxes T1R. However, they are a third the price.
I myself am on a tight budget and I just had to replace two tires unexpectedly, after doing tons of research, the FK's were the hands down choice for my budget without sacrificing much in the way of performance.

Agreed as I currently have the 912s. Sloppy handling and steering feel because of the soft sidewalls and the shallow tread design and wear so far looks like I'll probably only get 35ish kms on this set on very easy driving. Wet traction is pretty mediocre so I imagine there will be no traction at all with the smallest amount of snow. The 512s I had before were far superior.

I would get the Continentals.
