Shaw / Telus / Bell / Others? - TV / Homephone

Current plan with shaw ends in a couple of months. So far its $100 for
Digital TV + HD Basic
Homephone Basic
Extreme Internet

Looking to switch to someone who can offer similar package. Shaw will not budge since i'm an "existing" customer.

shenmecar 10-10-2011 12:22 PM

yup shaw is a fucking douchebag like that, you would think they would offer better packages for long time customers but they dont. they offer promo packages to new customers and rape old customers.

tonyzoomzoom 10-10-2011 12:45 PM

according to this thread, the telus 15/15/15 deal is good until Nov 1

For things like this, its always about leverage. I know they "say" they will give you a better plan if you are a "long term customer", but they won't. All they care about is having you on the "hook".

So here's what you need to do. You need to figure out the cheapest price that a direct competitor will offer you for a specific package that suits your needs. It doesn't matter if it's a promo plan for a year, student plan, whatever. If you can find a deal cheaper then theirs, call in and tell them that you want to cancel your services. You will be transferred to another department that deals with cancellation, better known as the "retention department". Talking to anyone other then retention is a waste of your time because they will not have the power to satisfy what you want. Here they will ask you why you wish to cancel. Tell them exactly what the other company is offering them. Don't bullshit them too much because they know what other people are charging too. But 9/10 times they will be able to match the pricing for what you are asking saving you the hassle of switching to a new company and also saving you money. Unfortunately I don't watch TV so I can't give you any specifics, but I do this for my cell phone plan and recently for Telus using a student deal from Shaw to match a student plan by 25Mbps and home line, saving me like 20 bucks a month. Here's some people talking about retention deals they got. Skip to the later pages.

[Home] Shaw HD-PVR Retention Type Deal - RedFlagDeals.com Forums

oldsnail 10-10-2011 02:49 PM

i have the telus 15 deal.. i came from shaw and i can notice the difference..

internet, no doubt shaw is better hands down with speed and consistency. telus still used twisted pair while shaw offers fibre to the node and coax down to your home. i would request the cisco wifi modem rather than the smc if with shaw.

tv, even though, tv is just tv.. the telus interface is easy to use compared to the motorola shaw pvr. telus has on screen tv caller ID which is sometimes useful when watching a tv show and you will not lose focus of your media. movies on demand, shaw has more coontent.. but i would assume most people would refer to the internet for movies.

shaw recently released its gateway pvr with 6 tuners that is suppose to surpass its competitors (telus has 3 tuners).. i would not know for i am locked in with telus for 3 years.

3 years ago, your suggestion would work. Currently, Shaw doesn't offer price reduction retention deals to existing customers anymore. They will simply let you walk.

This is what I was told by a friend at shaw as well. Effective Oct 1st - an address needs to be cold for 30 days before a retention/promo deal could be offered.

hopalong 10-10-2011 07:03 PM

Yup shaw is a pain in the ass to deal with. I was with them for 9 years and they wouldn't budge. I'm now with telus and have no complaints...so far

Mr.HappySilp 10-10-2011 11:57 PM

is pretty funny with the whole old customer get no promo. Simply switch names lol. Sign up with your dad's name with promo then your mom's name then back to your dad's name. etc etc etc......

If I were you I'd upgrade my plan to the Shaw Plan Personaliser w/ broadband 50. You can save a lot of money plus have a 50 mbp/s connection.

davy 10-11-2011 01:29 AM

Let me know if you guys want the 15/15/15 deal from Telus :)

sonick 10-11-2011 07:16 AM

I recently signed up for 15/15 with telus (TV and Internet), though I can't compare the quality of the internet/TV, my experience with their customer service has been outstanding as compared to the one time I tried to call Shaw and was told I'd have to wait 3.5 hours whereas Telus I get a rep within 5 minutes every time I've called them.

... although I was supposed to get Playboy for 3 months free, which hasn't shown up :okay:

don't trust this newb, come see me instead! I'm a veteran RS member :D

to add, Telus has a good customer loyalty department. you can cuss and complain your way to much better deals.

+1 and ur not missing anything with playboy, what a lame channel lol

anyway while i like telus, theyre just as hard to negotiate with. its not like cell phone companies where u can phone the main line and get a deal other than one advertised. i think if ur looking for a better deal your best bet is to somehow get a hold of an independant rep contracted to get telus customers. those guys seem to have way more freedom, wheras the guys on the main line would get fired for going outside regular promos set by marketing. they used to be better but seemed to have buckled down

i dont give a shit what anyone says, this is the best bundle. i pay $169/month for everything. this includes their broadband 50 internet, shaw home phone(best one they offer) and pretty much all their channels except hbo and other ones that they charge based on each individual channel. i also had to get south asian package for my parents and for my self i added the movie channels. quite happy with my service.

Mr.HappySilp 10-11-2011 01:55 PM

The few times I call SHAW for tech support (Internet not working) I was on hold for 2+ hours lol. By the time I got to talk to a rep the issue is fix anyways. So now I don't even want to call SHAW since I know by the time I talk to someone the issue is fix.

I hears stories (from customer mostly) where their wait time with SHAW was 3+hours. Just image a new customer wanting their service have to wait for 3hours........ How does that reflect on SHAW's overall service.

I don't think there that dumb. I could be wrong but I'm guessing new customers requesting service and existing customers looking for support have different que's and different wait times.

if that info was shared existing customers would be even more furious!
no matter how you dice it - shaw will still look horrible.

You over estimate them. When I was calling around for TV/Internet service as a new customer, I was quoted the hold time was going to be "between 3h36m and 5h26m", although they do provide a call-back service. Telus was almost immediate (less than 5 minute wait).

LP700-4 10-11-2011 03:26 PM

^Its less than 10 mins if you go on a computer and look for a online rep. on shaw's website.

SpartanAir 10-11-2011 07:29 PM

Anyone know of any deals for internet only? I have basic telus internet for like $45 a month with tax. Would prefer not to sign a contract.

death_blossom 10-11-2011 08:12 PM

Spartan, you can call into Telus and ask about canceling. you will get redirected to the Customer Loyalty department, aka retentions. you can say that you want to goto Shaw cuz they're offering a cheaper deal. my brother just did this recently and he was able to get 25Mbps internet package for $20/month for 1 year.

I think my post gave some ppl the wrong impression. I am a Telus field technician (contractor), not a sales person. I already received a few pm's asking about pricing and promotions. I don't have pricing details handy as I'm not a sales rep.

If you members want to know more details, I can call and ask for you guys. This is if you are serious and would like me to come to your house to install the services.

.Dream.Time 10-11-2011 09:10 PM

if any of you are students, telus has a wicked student deal right now... 25mbs internet for 22 bux a month in a bundle... and if u get home phone its 15 for home phone and 17 for internet... which is what I use. No Contract, 1 year pricing. If you need hook ups let me know.
