I hate how every "future visions" videos I have seen overwhelm us with glass displays and touch screen. I seriously don't need a piece of glass device spamming every kind of information that I don't need in every wall of my house.
almost all of those glass devices won't even work properly because there is no room to place the capacitance, microcontrollers, and transistors. So much bull crap that are only believable to people with non-engineering degrees. Also rofl at a piece of glass phone. The only feasible device is probably the 3-D monitor used by the guy in the office.
i think that would take some time to get used to that, that's a lot of information shown at once, none of which looked too generic to be for wide usage by people.

in 1987 people thought we'd be living like the jetsons in 2007. are we?

Nope. Doable. You'll get pretty close even with present day technology.
Also I mean this in the nicest possible way but from your post you definitely don't have an engineering degree =p

....right..... care to enlighten us how you would design such a device? Nice post with zero source or ideas backing. Useless.
The transparent display is easy enough, Samsung's even got AMOLED ones. Google it.
Offload the processing to a remote source. Stream your touch input data out through a wireless uplink while you stream the display data in.
For power - again, think wireless. Look up resonant inductive coupling. There was group out of UBC that got it up to 82% efficient using a 4-coil inductive link for a biomedical application. So run a receiver coil around the edge of the device.
So now you're left with requirements for an RF transceiver, the display controller, and the touchpanel controller. At my work we put SoC's on our boards with dual core MPU's, display controllers, camera controllers, memory controller, DSP's, comms processor etc, + the LPDDR2 memory packed into a 12x12mm package footprint. Qualcomm manages to pack an additional WLAN/GPS/BT into their SoC's at about the same footprint. So how big do you think a chip with just an RF transceiver, display and touchpanel controllers, and a couple on-die LDO's, inductors and caps needs to be? 3x3mm I'd say.
So. Grab some Gorilla Glass. Sandwich the display and the capacitive touchpanel between. Run the power coil around the edge. Put the SoC in the corner. Frost the edges of the glass.
Done.
