That claim is based on the number of tickets given for fare evasion vs the estimated number of rides any given day.
Since we don't have a completely accurate method of tracking riders (no faregates, no way to check how many people actually get on), and since not everyone who evades pays a ticket (four people on my
bus were busted today, only one pulled off for a ticket)...I, for one, don't trust either of those numbers.
Also, let's not forget that security barriers are not just about payment, they're also about SECURITY. Each and every station will now have at least one transit guard/transit cop at all times the station is open. You know how people say that it's hard to trace crime around the Skytrain stations because people can just commit a crime and then hop on two stations later? Or that being near a Skytrain station at night is dangerous 'cause nobody's around?
Yeah, that's gonna change.
