These replies are fairly in line with the general consensus at Jalopnik:

imo a lot of the cars posted in here have aged well..but by no means considered a timeless design...aka skyline gt-r...E36...DC2R

s2000, enzo, rx-7, mclaren F1, GT4j0 and NSX are more like it

Don't mean to shit on this thread, I want to stress that most of the cars here still look good today but a lot of them also look dated as heck.

I think most of you can agree with me, that of most of the cars posted, you could tell in a heartbeat what era/decade they were designed even if you weren't a car guy. I guess the dilemma lies in how quickly the car industry changes/evolves that very few designs can actually be defined as TIMELESS.

There are definitely cars that have aged well though, the Z32 that OP posted and the NSX would be on my list, but at the end of the day this isn't an "aged well" car design thread

^ yeah there are a lot of cars that will be "classics" forever but have aged for sure, average person on the street wouldn't think its a newer model... such as the original skyline.
where as NSX, FD3S RX7, MKIV Supra, R34 skyline, McLaren F1, F40, etc (the ones posted in this thread).... they've aged really well.

The thread could have gone two directions, one would adhere to a criteria so strict that only a small number of cars would ever truly be appropriate. The MB 300 SL, E-Type Jaguars, MIV Supra and NA2 NSX would all fit, because the lines of their bodies flow together smoothly and naturally, as if modelled after the body of a woman. The thread has gone in another direction, focusing on timeless fundamental design characteristics. From the third gen skyline forward the design changed minimally, because the original Datsun inception of it is fundamentally so.. right. The average person on the street, could look at a third gen skyline and an R34 and see the lineage. That's in comparison to the majority of cars which either die off or become unrecognizable from their original conception.

Even the Porsche 911, arguably the most timeless car of all time, is easily recognizable as being decades old to the average person.

I agree with you that certain fundamental design shapes and characteristics don't grow old (ie. 911's classic profile) But there are people in this thread who are simply posting old cars that look good which is very different from being timeless and a line should be drawn between the two.
