Williams Lake man busted for ICBC fraud after bragging on Facebook
 

Bragging on Facebook was the downfall of a Williams Lake man who attempted to defraud the Insurance Company of B.C. of more than $18,000.

Corbin Lewis Joseph, 24, was prohibited from driving when he rolled his truck on a rural road near Springhouse, a small community west of Williams Lake, on Jan. 1, 2009.

None of the people in the vehicle were seriously injured.

In order to collect insurance on his totalled truck, he convinced a friend to tell ICBC that she was driving at the time of the crash.

His story unravelled after ICBC’s special investigation unit found out Joseph was bragging on his Facebook page that he had rolled his truck after drinking at a New Year’s party and subsequently got a big payout from ICBC.

When investigators interviewed his friends, they admitted Joseph drove to and from the party, and had put the vehicle in the ditch twice that night.

Joseph tried to persuade the woman who lied for him to continue the ruse, texting and Facebook messaging her with offers of money and legal help if she stuck to the story. But instead she cooperated with ICBC.

In September Joseph pleaded guilty in B.C. Provincial Court to fraud over $5,000 and obstructing justice. He was sentenced earlier this month.

For the fraud, Joseph was fined $2,000 and ordered to pay $18,350 in restitution. On the obstruction charge Joseph was given a three-month conditional sentence order, followed by six months of probation.

According to online court records Joseph was also sentenced earlier this month in B.C. Supreme Court for failing to stop at an accident with a person and dangerous driving causing bodily harm. He received a six-month conditional sentence and an 18-month driving prohibition.

He has previously been ticketed three times for speeding.

Funny, every time I've been to Williams Lake (a few times a year for 10+ years), I noticed white, asian, east indian and black people.

Meh, guess they were just natives in disguise.
