Word is getting out that the 335i isn't particularly faster than the 328i - faster in a straight line yes but not as fast around a corner:

2012 BMW 328i Sport First Test - Motor Trend

Quote:
Want to know the real kicker? Don't tell BMW, but the 328i is better than the 335i. I lapped both at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca during BMW's launch event. We brought both home to test (you'll be seeing the 335i First Test soon), and we all agree. Yes, the 335i is a lot faster thanks to that turbo-six, but the 328i is the better car to drive. The four-cylinder car is 50 pounds lighter in the nose and the engine sits behind the front axle, making for a superb weight balance that the big-engine car just can't match. On the track and on the road, the 335i feels a bit more nose-heavy and a bit looser out back, with the rear end wanting to step out in turns, whereas the 328i is perfectly planted throughout. Sure, the 328i doesn't have the top end speed of the 335i, but it's more rewarding to drive fast. What's more, BMW's own driving instructors at the track confided that the lap times were nearly identical, with the 335i faster on the straights and the 328i faster through the corners.
This isn't the first review I've read where the 328i was the preferred version. I think Car and Driver said much the same.

Decision made, going with the 328i, pulled the trigger!

Lots of good info in this thread, really helped me make this decision. It boils down to that initial feeling you get when you fist try each car, and for me the 328i felt just right!

Now comes the waiting. Should have it some time in April.

Driver assist blind spot and lane departure
Navigation
Heads up display

Pretty much fully loaded, out of everything on the options list I declined only the BMW apps.

Wow, I was taking a look at the specs for the 328i and the fuel economy is 9city/5.5highway for the manual and 8city/5.3highway for the automatic. All in L/100km of course. The automatic is so much more fuel efficient. Very impressive for the amount of power you have.

I don't know if I believe those numbers, but I do wish they were right. For the first few month I'll try to track the usage and see for myself.

In theory, with twin turbo and "econo" mode it makes sense that there would be substantial fuel savings.

the 3 is better than them for now, but the next C and A4 would be, like usual, going to out do the BMW with the interior (at least i hope so... the current ones do look like crap materials. E90's have pretty crappy interiors on the base 323i, 328i or even 335i)

sure the euro cars interiors have nicer designs, but I think the Japanese have better material quality and are a little better put together than the german 3. I could imagine a 06 Lexus IS with an interior that has aged much better, than say a 06 330i (with leather option) higher quality plastics and soft touch vinyl are in the Lexus/Acuras. buttons and switches are also less likely to wear or fade on the japanese cars too.

not really a bias opinion, but seeing what i've seen so far... heck, i drive a variety of different of BMWs for work everyday. i spend more time in a BMW than my actual car

I agree, Japanese got ergonomics down pretty well. German car interior looks nice but to be honest Japanese car like lexus is usually a much nicer place to be inside. BMW interior sucks lol, experience from my 335i & M3.

+1 on this. My 09 335i lease is up this year and a 328i isn't even a consideration. In fact, when I get a 328i as a loaner car it's a good shot in the arm how nice the 335i is.

I'll have to agree with both posts.

I grew up with Japanese cars, primarily Toyota, Honda, and Subaru. My first Euro experience was my mom's VW Cabrio. It was nothing compared to what I was used to. Fast forward years later, I bought the E30 325i - ergonomics weren't the greatest compared to my Toyota MR2 but I got used to it. One thing's for sure, the E30 was a blast to drive. Same with my Alfa Romeo Spider. (Not ergonomic at all.) Then came the E36 M3. Probably the worst interior compared to most BMWs but again, a blast to drive. My E91...that's another story. Personal preference goes to the E46.

Going back and forth between BMWs and Lexus' cars, Lexus definitely has refined ergonomics whereas the BMWs and Mercedes-Benz cars I've been in aren't comparable. But Tapioca is right. Japanese cars are just...well...boring to drive.

Everybody has their own preference. Mine will have to go with a car that's a blast to drive.

Oh, and I once had a 2010 VW Jetta rental - that thing was the biggest piece of shit ever. The only saving grace was its motor.
