I took reactine/claritin/all that other shit for years the only thing that helped me was taking probiotics, kombucha, and theralac.

Ugh. Allergies are pissing me off. My new "thing" is my left ear gets clogged up. Totally fucks with my head and my balance. I actually feel dizzy because of it. Plus my nose is runny/clogged. Not liking this one bit. Been taking Reactine but it seems it takes a good 6-8 hours for it to kick in.

If one antihistamine doesn't work for you (immediately and alleviates most if not all symptoms) try a different brand. Different antihistamines have different mechanisms of action. Nothing beats good old prescription Nasonex for them tough sinus allergies, though!

AERIUS helped me TREMENDOUSLY. I recommend everyone trying that brand instead of reactine and claritin, it worked extremely well for me.

I've heard multiple times that allergy medications often need to be taken for a month or so to start showing the "30 minute relief" stated in commercials, or any real alleviation. Anyone know if this is true?

It is very frustrating and makes me feel "sick" all the time. Quote:

Anyone know if this is true? | I find that it takes about a week or two for the OTC allergy medication to somewhat start to work. If i take one pill here or there, I don't get any relief. Even my allergist and ENT have said the same thing....nasal spray and OTC pills need to be taken consistently for at least a week....if you forget a day...it starts all over again |

Did all of you have allergies right from when you were a kid? When I was younger I never had anything. But when I was in my later teen years it started to kick in. Keep hoping one of these years it will just go away for good.

Usually people try something like this:
Reactine/Claritin (cheaper) --> Aerius (not so cheap) --> Allegra-D/Claritin-D (D is for the decongestant (pseudophedrine laced in with the antihistamine)...
For Nasal symptoms
... Best thing to do is keep an otrivin nasal spray decongestant on hand (xylometolazine / oxymetazoline?) and use it once every 8-12 hrs (MAX 3 days) until you can go in and see your doctor for the flonase/nasonex nasal spray
For Eye symptoms (itch/watery)
... mild symptoms should be taken care of with those pills mentioned earlier, otrivin eye drops are good also, but again.. MAX 3 days of use otherwise you could get a flare up. Cromolyn is a non-prescription eye drop you guys can pick up at a local pharmacy that takes a few days to kick in if you use it properly (four times a day), if these eye remedies don't work, ask your doctor for something called patanol
For other associated stuff like headache, ear congestion, use a decongestant containing product!! (pseudophedrine if taking pill, or xylometolazine/oxymetolazone (sp))!

You can use a syringe or something to do it, but if you're going to do it regularly buy a neti pot - it's a small plastic teapot you put in your nose and the water flows through and out of your other nostril etc. - i found syringe was a pain in the ass and so i started using neti pot. I get post nasal drip issues once a year or so so that's why i sometimes have to use it.

things that work are:
ginger candy
drinking lots of strong coffee
Lots of sleep
Chinese Herbal stuff that you boil for hours and taste and smells like shit works really well.
eating raw fruits and vegetables will cause more allergies, if you drink water like canadian springs or tap water etc, try to stay away from that and drink perrier. Stay away from red meats, limes, lemons, soda, juice, etc.
This is the first year I haven't had any allergies, in previous years i could sneeze 10 times in a row within a minute. No meds worked like reactine, claritin, aerius etc.

I normally have the worst allergies on the planet and I've tried pretty much every medicine possible but for the past couple years I've been taking this Chinese herbal shit that my mom gets for me. Can still feel it but no stuffy/leaky nose.
If its really really bad I'll get a prescription for a nasal sprayer too but so far haven't needed it.
It's called Pe Min Kan Wan. I take 5 or so per day.
Can get it from any of those chinese herbal shops. It's cheap as fuck too.
