| Chivalry
This is to discuss the topic of chivalry. Do you believe it is the right thing to do? Do you believe it needs to be a trait that is more prevalent in modern men? Do you believe it is outdated? If so what killed it? Are us Vancouver men chivalrous?
I'll start.
I believe chivalry is the right thing to do, I fell it is not being sexist as many may think, rather I believe it is being respectful and a courtesy that should be offered regardless. I also believe it has fallen as of late and should be used more often. I do not believe chivalry promotes authority over woman but is a a simple form of respect that should be used.

Don't mind CRS. He's just referring to a repeat offender "member" who would ask similar questions randomly.

I'm "chivalrous" to women or men, young or old, abled or disabled.
However it's fun to note that only abled women will ever give me a dirty look or snarky comment in return. I seem to get at the very least a smile from all other people

Most women will thank you and smile. I do the same when they hold the door for me. Basic human courtesy if they're right behind you or within a couple steps. I'd hold the door for a dude.
But I've been yelled at more than once because in holding the door, I was implying that as a woman, she wasn't strong enough to open the door herself...because I'm clearly absolutely stupid and thought that because I'm not aware small children can open doors just fine.

You can't one day decide to be chivalrous. It's something that is decided through your upbringing, childhood and parenting.

Chivalry is dead because of all those stuck up bitches who scream at you when you try to do them a favor.. or be nice. I usually get a "Thank-you" but I've also gotten the "WHAT?!?! You don't think I can open the door myself? WTF?!"
Those bitches just get on my nerves soooo bad. All I can think of then is, "I hope you fall on your face, bitch."

I open doors for women I pass my GF the seat belt in the car and close the door for her. I walk on the outside of the sidewalk and let her walk protected on the inside. I pick a flower when I see one and give it to her. I hold hands with a lead hand. I've always been this way and dont recall my parents teaching me this nor do I recall my father being this way.
Theres many things I do that some might label as chivalrous and some would label as sexist.

Where do you guys go that women get mad at your for holding a door open for them?
That seems crazy to me. I've never had that happen and I hold doors open on a daily basis when I take public transit to school.

Theres many things I do that some might label as chivalrous and some would label as sexist. | That's not really what I meant. I was more referring to the fact of parents instilling a sense of respect towards women in their kids (male kids). I know mine did, and even if someone scowls at me I'll still hold the door open because its the polite and respectful thing to do. It has nothing to do with being sexist and I have no idea how this notion came about.

Here in Germany, not the case. I actually get thanked more than often enough and no one ever scowls.

^ Out of the hundreds of women I have held the door for, I have never been challenged once. I have not been thanked or acknowledged for it many times, but the prime offenders have been international students from Asian countries who know nothing about manners and courtesy (and before people accuse me of being racist, I am a Chinese guy.)

I hold doors open/wait on closing elevator doors etc etc for everyone. I was raised to be nice to anyone and everyone, not just the ladies. Haven't ever gotten shit for it, so I don't really know where or what you guys are doing to get shit from the women.
Maybe all these bitchy ones are Downtown or something. I stay the fuck away from there unless it's a party night. |

It's not that they are not polite, it's more that they are not used to it in their part of the world. Busy, busy, busy and there's no time for being nice. It's just the way it is. It's not really thier culture per se, because there are people from that culture who are polite and considerate.
So, you're not really racist.......... because you're Chinese. Like a black guy can call a fellow black guy a "nigger." J/K .........just yanking your chain, LOL
I shop at Crystal Mall a lot and I've seen some pretty scary stuff there. Everything from spitting and people pushing their way past others without care. Yesterday some young asshat pushed his way past me to talk to the cashier, while I was talking to the chashier. I basically gave him a bit of a hip check and sent him flying (skinny little shit). I did the, "so solly, so solly" with the look of shock that I, by accident, hurt him. He looked pretty mad at first but thought otherwise when I made a fist. I was so ready to knock him on his ass again.

Theres many things I do that some might label as chivalrous and some would label as sexist. | You are a gentleman and a scholar.......... I used to do that with my girlfriend and even my wife........ don't do it anymore. Should, though. I'll try it today. May shock her, but it's cool.

Maybe it is how you guys hold the door open for them?
Do you approach a door, see a lady walking behind you, then hold it open to let them in first???
For the most part I open the door, walk in, and do a "shoulder check" to see if someone is behind me, if there is then I hold it open with one hand. That's what I do unless I notice the person behind me has some sort of disability (handicap, too many shopping bags etc.), then I open the door, step to the side holding the door open and let them through first.
or
If someone is approaching towards me from behind the door I will open it and let them walk through first.
Haven't had a single incident with anyone
