Highest paid definitely seem to be Ophthalmologists. I just met an optometrist who said they make no money and its all the ophthalmologists that are making huge money now. Starting with and undergraduate degree, its a minimum 13 years of school.

My mom has been working in a doctors office (same practice) for like 35 years - she tells me all the stories about them. (plus sis is a psych resident in toronto, so I guess my mom succeeded with her, but failed with me.....)

They do make quite a bit of money, but they also work quite hard. For a lot of us, going to a doctor, there isn't much more they can do other than hot fluids, rest and an advil. But where they have to work hard are all the seniors coming in. Many have been to the same doctor for the past 20 years, and the doctor knows all their recurring conditions, etc. They get paid a little more if the patient is above x number of years in age, but for good reason.

There's a reason I don't bother going to the doctor unless I need a note, or if there's something very wrong that I've never experienced. If I have flu/cold symptoms, what do you expect going to a doctor?

Exactly, a Doctor did not go to school to learn how to treat a cold, they went to school to learn how to differentiate a cold from meningitis. If you have nothing more significant than a mild cold, you shouldn't expect them to diagnose anymore than fluids, Advil and rest, as nothing more is necessary. On the rare occasion that you might instead have meningitis however, properly diagnosing it will prevent you from dying. I have a friend who was having pain in her side last fall, the doctor felt her side and recognized it was not something minor like cysts, she was in an oncologists office later that week. Misdiagnosis would have cost her life.

People on RS like to complain, before stepping back and considering the bigger picture.

Surprised there are so many in the low $100K range. I figured a doctor would at least be in the $200K range, and by $200K I mean take home, not minus expenses. I figure they are easily worth that much.

Buddy from high school is an anesthesiologist in the US and he was creeping up on $400K last time we talked.

I feel bad for a lot of family physicians .. real estate is $$$ in Vancouver, after paying the lease for their clinic + all the other overhead fees, they're not taking home that much at all compared to other professions that require similar schooling.

Definitely a tough job IMO.

I know a few doctors that work part time. They might only work 2 or 3 days a week, either because they are only starting out, because they haven't found a full time position at a practice, or because they want to work less for their family or other commitments.

My family doctor makes:

$650,000

Less: Taxes (273,672)
Gross Income 376,328
Less: Overhead costs (273,672)
Net Income $148,828

so, $148,828left to pay for student loans etc. if he were to work by himself the average overhead costs of 35% is paid out by himself.

But since he works in practice with 3 other doctors, most likely split even like a partnership, he'd pay only $91,224, which leaves him with $285,104 for take home pay, which isn't bad at all.
