I think it depends on how aggressive your brake pads are. I've only been using Armour Detail Supply wheel coating for the last couple of wheels I've bought. I coated the winter wheels and only finally washed them just this weekend for the first time and most of the brake dust rinsed off with the pressure washer. It didn't take any force or effort to wash the rest of the brake dust off with some wheel cleaner and a mitt. So I'd say a wheel coating is nice to have if you have OEM/street pads.

It depends on the wheel size/design/spokes but I've been able to do 2 coats on one set of 19" wheels or 1 coat on two sets of 18" wheels. A little goes a long way when applying a coating.

I had Gtechniq C5 Wheel Armour on my wheels and they lasted around 3 years. They made a big difference in general cleaning of the wheel - just standard soap and water was enough. I'm now back to using proper wheel cleaner. Carpro and Gyeon both have products that claim they last 1-2 years.

Spray ceramic sealants don't last very long due to the heat of the brakes.
