The Layover (w/Anthony Bourdain)

Alright, so here's a new show narrated and hosted by Anthony Bourdain. It's called The Layover. It's similar to No Reservations but different. Anthony basically has 24-30 hours during his layover to try out various foods around the city. This show is setup to be more of a "proper" travel guide for people who are here on a short whim. Who wants the best food in the city without wasting much of their time. I quite enjoy it.

He talks about new york so fucking much. He's worse than Marvel in that sense.

The Singapore and Montreal Episode are awesome.

Great TV series. -gotta try those L.A. restaurants that Anthony recommended.

Singapore food is awesome! That airport has gotta be the best in the world. Superslides, free movies, and reclining chairs. :)

Ronin 05-05-2012 09:17 PM

I've seen all the episodes so far. I think Amsterdam and HK were the highlights for me.

waddy41 05-06-2012 10:17 AM

so hungry....

Watched the first part of the HK episode. IT's good that they are respecting that "Hong Kong is Not Really China", one of the few shows to do that. They even interviewed a local who brought it up passionately, which was a nice touch.

Then he goes to call "yin yeung" in mandarin

He was just pronouncing the name of the drink in English instead of saying "coffee with tea". The pronunciation is correct in English, which would be like saying Beijing instead of Peking.

watching the singapore episode makes me kind of miss the food. i dont think theres a place in vancouver to eat min jiang kway or chwee kuay. also the chicken rice in vancouver really isnt comparable to singaporean chicken rice. hate how they use drumstick/chicken breast/thigh meat deboned in most places here. good thing i have a mother that can cook all of it :fullofwin:

also some good times in the geylang. can't forget eating nasi lemak one night and walking to grab a bus and getting grabbed by a bunch of persistent china hookers that wouldnt leave me alone lol

But he was translating from mandarin to english, not cantonese to english. To use your analogy, it would be more like referring to Hong Kong as "Xiang gang" throughout the show, instead of "Hong Kong".

It's all I ever drink, unless the place has really good milk tea.

Tasting terrible would be a compliment but the dude said it tasted VILE! I was like common dude it ain't that bad is it. My preference is always the cold milk tea but once in a while a good mixed one is not too shabby.

Highly recommend this season (8) of No Reservations...some of the best episodes he's ever done. Episode 05 about Cook It Raw is awesome.
