People can bitch about turn-by-turn not coming to the iPhone 4, but here's another way to look at it: Do you think the developers of Navigon, TomTom or other nav Apps are complaining? I bet they're happy since they can still sell their Apps and they weren't all put out of business overnight.

And with Apple purchasing data from TomTom (and also apparently MS, among others) then they could also be doing this to appease TomTom as part of their deal. Nobody really knows all the reasons, so everyone picks the easy one that Apple is doing it strictly to force people to upgrade. If that were the case, why even offer iOS 6 on the 3GS then? Just drop support for it altogether and leave it on the latest version of iOS 5.

Clearly it's not so cut & dry as some decisions Apple makes appear to be wanting people to upgrade while others aren't.
You think Apple is concerned in the least with 'appeasing' developers? While at the same time they take any popular app, and integrate its features into iOS, killing that app (with ios6 you can also add InstaPaper to the list)?

Do you really think they witheld the features from other models to appease TomTom? Why did they leave Siri off the iPad 2 when adding it to iPad 3 then? Who are they appeasing there? Not developers that's for sure, and certainly not customers.

Apple loves developers. Until they can make more money taking their ideas and integrating them into the OS.

Most people don't know the difference between phone hardware sales and OS sales.

The iPhone 4 is the best selling smart phone. There are more of them out there than any other single smart phone. However, there are more Android users than iOS users overall but those Android users are spread over many different brands and models while iOS users are always on Apple hardware and usually the latest Apple hardware.

Some people seem confused about the difference.

iPhone is the best selling phone!

No, Android is the best selling phone!

...when they're both somewhat right...

And of course, when it comes time to talk about the BEST phone... of course it's the iPhone

That's not what I said. Android has more devices in the world, yet there are more developers coding for iOS. Which is why the App Store is generating such huge numbers in terms of downloads and $$$ paid back to developers.

Apple is buying data from TomTom, which is a fact. Do you actually think during negotiations with TomTom that the subject of Apple integrating a feature into iOS 6 that would render their Apps obsolete never came up?

TomTom could be getting more money from Apple selling their map data than they are getting from the App Store. In this case they wouldn't care if their Apps no longer sold since their bottom line has improved. But if their revenue from selling map data was less than their revenue from the App Store then why would they even agree to sell their data to Apple in the first place?

It's a gross oversimplification to think these decisions were made based on only one criteria (limit older devices to sell new ones) even though that would be one of the things they were considering.

As to apps being taken over by the OS, this has been going on since DOS first came out. People used to pay for utilities like "defrag" at one time. Or run a separate program to "unzip" a file. There are a lot of features that people expect should be a part of an OS. If I'm a developer I could look at an OS and say "hey, they don't have this feature" and create a program to fill that gap. At the same time, I'm not going to get upset if this feature ends up in the OS itself later on (unless they're infringing on my IP).

Besides, for every app that had features ending up in iOS there are 10,000 more that haven't. So it's not like developers are running scared that Apple is somehow going to "rob" them and their ideas. In fact it's the opposite - developers are flocking to iOS at a rate that's more than twice that of Android.

Well, there's a review up on Engadget on the new Macbook Pro with Retina display. Here's a quote:

"The primary Apple apps -- Safari, Mail, the address book, etc. -- have all been tweaked to make use of all these wonderful pixels. Sadly, little else has. While we got assurances that third-party apps like Adobe Photoshop and AutoCAD are in the process of being refined, right now, seemingly every third-party app on the Mac looks terrible."

You can read the article but it states what I already previously stated in this thread - that existing software will run, but will have interface and usability issues until it's updated.

So much for "not needing" to get Apps updated to work on the new Retina display.

In other words, Apple lied about their scaling being any good.

So not only are they fooling people like Ronin into thinking they need to switch to Apple software "because retina", customers actually may have to switch if they want to make use of their $2200 purchase. Depending on what software they are using (Chrome is already fixed)

As an aside, that is some horrible writing on that site. The grammar is poor, and it is not very informative. They say "seemingly every third-party app" looks bad, but what the fuck does that mean? They need to list these apps, and tell exactly what is wrong with them. They give ONE example, Chrome, which has been fixed in the Canary version. So what are all these other apps that look horrible? They list two that are being "worked on" but they don't actually explain what is wrong with them.

Sites like Engadget are great for covering news and press conferences, and spilling leaked info. But for actual reviews, they are useless.

So what does that have to do with not allowing the 4 to have turn by turn? You'd rather appease Tom Tom than millions of iPhone 4 users?

^ My original post was directed at two different things. One was a comment about Android/iOS market share the other was about TomTom. I never said they were related - they just both ended up in a single post. I was just too lazy to bother putting "quotes" in before my comments to clarify who I was responding to.

They don't have anything to do with each other.

iOS6 was Apple's last chance to keep me but since it's a disappointment, I've made the decision to switch to Android for my next phone.

It doesn't matter what the next iPhone will be because all the major software features have already been shown and they haven't added anything I really wanted.

@4:05
That Tasker app on Android is EXACTLY what I wanted for the last 2 years! Part of the reason why I don't use passcode lock on my iphone is that I don't see a point in having it when I'm at home.

iOS6 was pretty disappointing I would have to say nothing really big or exciting but over all just a minor refresh...who knows when they actually release it in the fall they might add some more things...only Apple knows..
