The Blackberry 10 Thread

Hail Mary in Motion is coming out with there soon to be released Blackberry 10 line of phones. Lately, we've been seeing more videos and specifications being released about the UI and design of some future phones from the struggling Canadian cell phone company.

The latest videos show a new direction from Blackberry that has never been seen before...

"BlackBerry 10 hands-on" - Videos - Viddler

Seems like they're pushing a UI keyboard rather than a physical one now and have focused on ways which may or may not make typing on a touch screen more convenient and functional.

Design may still change, but as of now, I'd hate to see them take away the physical keyboard from these phones...

This vid is old. Your comment about keyboards is sorta why blackberry is dying. Stubborn refusal to embrace change and innovation.

All this was shown at the announcement almost 2 months ago :P

RIM is pretty much a goner. It's just a matter of when.

I couldn't find the old thread in Mobile Phone Chat so I thought it had been deleted.

I know it's old but they've been giving out devices to companies like Engadget to do reviews on their new software so I thought I would bring it back up again.

To say Blackberry is dying because people refuse to give up the keyboard is grossly inaccurate. I no longer use a Blackberry and yet here I am looking for a keyboard on my phone...I've embraced change and inovation several times a year actually...But, the only thing that brings me back to Blackberry at this moment, is the easy of a full qwerty physical keyboard.

These are just "mule" casings given out with the advance Berry 10 phones to developers and reviewers/etc.. the final product case will be different, RIM wanted to keep a wrap on the design for now.

There will be a physical keyboard model, if I recall the original plan was to launch the touchscreen only version first then a month or two later launch the physcial QWERTY keyboard model.

Looks too much like an iphone to me.
I like the idea and if blackberry predictive text is as good as android I can see it helping, but I doubt it'll get RIM out of it's grave. It's too late

RIM: BlackBerry 10 phones with physical QWERTY in pipeline - SlashGear

Quote:
RIM: BlackBerry 10 phones with physical QWERTY in pipeline

RIM CEO Thorsten Heins has insisted that there will be QWERTY-keyboard blessed BlackBerry 10 handsets when the new platform launches, despite the developer device being touch-only. The company prompted speculation yesterday that it was shifting away from its legendary hardware keyboards, when it confirmed plans to distribute a full-touch BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha to developers attending BlackBerry World 2012 this week, and spent keynote time demonstrating a new on-screen keyboard with predictive text.

That predictive technology eschews the current UI for touchscreen text entry – where words are suggested in a bar running across the top of the virtual keyboard – and instead creates a cloud of possible words around the users’ thumbs. There they can be easily swiped-to, rather than shifting fingers up to above the keyboard.

However, for those addicted to RIM’s physical ‘boards, the focus on touch seemed like a worrying portent. Not to worry, says Heins. What was shown during the keynote was simply “a portion” of what’s to come with BlackBerry 10, and there will definitely be a QWERTY option in the company’s portfolio.

“We [have] the best physical keyboard on the planet” Heins boasted. “We don’t want to give that up.”

Nonetheless, industry and market reaction to BlackBerry 10 has been mixed, with RIM’s stock price ditching in after-market trading as the Canadian company’s suggestions that it hadn’t wanted to rush BlackBerry 10 failed to satisfy. RIM is yet to commit to a specific release date for handsets running the new software.

You guys may have seen/heard that Nokia purchased Scalado the company responsible for this camera feature in BB10 (Nokia has had a history of using Scalados services btw)

Nokia said they were going to bring it to Lumia a week or so ago and these features have now been released for all Lumia devices in the US/Canada as an App in the marketplace, supposedly it becomes integrated into the native camera ui after installation

Nokia has also said they have no interest in providing Scalados features to competitor OS' or renewing contracts with other OS' who've signed on prior to the purchase (that means BB)

Nokia Camera Extras hits Lumia 900 in US and China, offers four new ways to capture candids | All Phone News

So how shitty is that for BB10
1) the competition already has these features to use Now and
2) BB with these features will be short lived

:/

Nokia already allowed it.

Last week when Nokia announced they were acquiring the Sweden-based company Scalado, many BlackBerry fans raised the question of what would happen to the awesome "time warp" camera feature in BlackBerry 10 due to the fact RIM was licensing the functionality from the company. As expected and now confirmed by The Verge, Scalado will be keeping their agreement with RIM and the functionality will make its way to BlackBerry 10:

"We're doing it in such a way that Scalado can...fully deliver on commitments they've made to all of their partners, that includes RIM," - Kevin Shields, SVP of Program and Product Management at Nokia

Now while RIM can continue to the use the technology, Kevin Shields also confirmed that further licensing agreements are not currently planned for now meaning, Nokia will be holding Scalados developers, technologies and Intellectual Property to themselves.

RIM has stated several times that the first BlackBerry 10 device will be an all-touchscreen smartphone. This will be followed up by a physical QWERTY keyboard. New details today have leaked online that reveal RIM will make an official BlackBerry 10 device announcement in August, specifically the BlackBerry L-series and then the N-series. An internal doc posted online by N4BB shows the L-series will have a 768×1280 screen resolution, 356 PPI (Pixels Per Inch), and will be 55mm wide. This currently looks like the Alpha device that developers are using, like a mini-PlayBook. As for the N-Series (previously codenamed Nevada), will reportedly come in with lower specs, sporting a 720×720 screen resolution, between 52 – 53mm wide, have 330 PPI, and a physical QWERTY keyboard (similar to the current flagship Bold 9900).

As for release dates, RIM has always stated that BB 10 will launch in “the latter part of 2012,” but 4BB reports that we might see the BlackBerry L-series “as early as the first half of September,” and the BlackBerry N-series sometime during Q1 2013.

Following up on the BlackBerry 10 L-series and N-series leaks this week, we get what are claimed to be concept images for the BlackBerry App World in BlackBerry 10. As expected, BlackBerry App World will get a UI overhaul and a few new features. Here’s what’s currently known:

The “Purchase/Download” button becomes the “Add Review” button after you have bought/downloaded the app.
A “Trending” category (pretty much a top sellers/downloaded at the time).
Assuming these concept images will come to fruition, how do you like App World’s new look? Do you like the new carousel to show ‘trending apps’? Check out two more images below.

Quote:
Many have wondered what the BlackBerry N-series is going to be like. From what we’ve been hearing, it is essentially similar in size to the Bold 9790. However, the BlackBerry N-series will lack one of the staple features of a BlackBerry. There will not be a TrackPad on the BlackBerry N-series.

As the internal slide above describes, RIM has found a solution to combine the touch nature of the BlackBerry 10 operating system with a physical keyboard. The solution RIM has found is to “augment the QWERTY keyboard with a streamlined touch version of extended keyboard commands.” You can see an example of this in the slide above where it shows both a word completion and umlaut selection overlay in the Action Bar part of the screen estate.

The BlackBerry N-series is going to be one incredible device. The swipe gestures you’ve come to know on the BlackBerry PlayBook will be packed into this 720×720 square OLED screen. Imagine how you’ll be able to multi-task and murder some email/messaging with that amazing physical keyboard BlackBerry purists know and love. Let us know if you think RIM’s idea of combining the physical keyboard and on-screen typing options will be effective. Will you miss the TrackPad? Sound off TeamBlackBerry!

Quote:
Have you been wondering what BlackBerry Messenger on BlackBerry 10 could possibly look like? Now you get the very first glimpse ever! BBM in BlackBerry 10 will be taking full advantage of the OLED screen. How will it be doing that you ask? According to the internal slide, RIM will be opening up BBM to themes for a very special reason.

Quote:
IM has been and always will be about saving battery life. By utilizing a darker theme and colors on BBM alone, RIM says it will significantly improve battery life. With just a simple black theme, RIM estimates that battery consumption can be decreased by as much as 25%. Additionally, RIM says with further optimization to take advantage of the OLED screen, you could decrease upwards of 75% battery consumption.

What do you think of the new look for BBM? We’re sure this isn’t the only way it will look. From what RIM has shown with Cascades, we may see some of those TAT animations play a role in the BBM UI. Nonetheless, it is great to see RIM working in every angle to optimize battery life. Let us know what you think!

P.S. We LOVE that RIM is using N4BB green
