When the iphone 4S first came out I had 3 of them,two transactions went smooth,but the third transaction was a potential robbery in mind.I met up with two sketchy looking guys from CL.When they arrived at the meeting location,one guy asked to see the phone,I opened the passenger side door to grab the phone on the seat and to also reveal the pitbull sitting next to it staring at them.What happened next was,one of the guys made some excuse how he did not have enough money and he needed to go to the atm,I said sure no problem I will be here waiting,30 minutes go by they did not come back,called his phone,no answer.
Before we met up,we agreed on the price,he said he had all the money and really wanted the phone.

The seller did the right thing by meeting up in a public place, I'm always wary of selling high priced items on CL. Rather sell it on eBay, even ship it locally than to meet up with some stranger.

General rules of dealing with selling online..
- No blocked number bull shit.
- Public place (depending on the item)
- Bring a friend (generally I let them sit in the car in view, anything goes down he can call for help..)
I mean it really depends what your selling... Just ask your self some key questions.
Does it make sense? Is it sketchy? Do I know where i'm meeting this guy up is?
Use common sense and you should be good.
Overall just remember if he has a knife/gun just give it to him and report it to police... nothing your selling is worth more then your life.

Usually when I meet up for a craigslist sale after work I'll wear my steel toe boots, have a knife and hammer hanging off of my pants.
Now I have to wear eye protection as well?

haha what I do if the person sounds sketch through the phone is arrive at the destination (skytrain stn, mall, etc) & wait for the other person to arrive before letting him know what I look like or pretend that I'd be there in like 2 min
then I'd ask what he's wearing/holding, and if he doesn't look shady I'd initiate. but I've only done this like twice meeting up at night
probably done over 50 transactions so far, and everything was always smooth
sketchiest one i've had was meeting up with these surrey boys to sell a bomber; quiet guys looked at each other & came up to me and i was like  but one of the guys reached out for props so i was like kk

You can only use the same amount of force/weapon as the attacker. It's better that you make sure he's dead so he can't sue you, or just beat him with a club. I think that would be considered equal

i was at oakridge food court area after the incident happen, ppl were coughing and hacking walking through the food court from the pepper spray residue, police ambulance showed up, it was quite a scene

I would never sell big items on craigslist, the most I've sold is a set of logitech x540 speakers, and that was to a 12 year old with his mom in the car  .

However, if someone confronted you with mace (an incapacitating device) and you responded with a knife, I believe courts would rule you are using excessive force to defend yourself.
Does anyone meet up for CL sales outside police stations? Is it legal to conduct private business outside a police station?

Outside a police station is considered public property, isn't it? About as legal as any other piece of pavement...
