It's Shark Week - Let's Discuss Finning

Shark finning has been discussed many times before on RS. The practice of finning continues however and the so the discussion should as well. Remember, whether you choose to order shark fin soup yourself or simply eat it when it's made available at an event, you are supporting the horrifically cruel and unsustainable practice.

The clip is graphic.

There are already a number of other threads about shark finning, is there an actual need for another one?

Well, at least in that vid they pretty much killed the shark by cutting its throat and head off. There's another video where they don't even do this step. I see the reasoning behind the ban based on shark extinction, but not for animal cruelty. Humans need to eat and slaughtering cows/pigs/chickens is not a pleasant sight either. What can you do, we need meat to survive!

The only thing I have to say about finning is NO. There are literally no pros to finning. Maybe extra jobs? But its not worth it.

Fucken horrific....How do the fisherman sleep at night? I don't care if I was starving I would find ways to live where nothing is harmed. I wonder how they would feel if some one came into there house lured them into a room cut there mouth up, cut there throat, cut there arms and feet off and them throw them back into the living room.......humans sometimes disgust me

If you don't like it, don't open the thread.

Increasing awareness and maintaining the discussion of a still very active issue will only bring about positives.

True, however with cows, pigs, chickens and other domesticated animals, an intense amount of attention is given to ensure the animal does not suffer more than necessary. Slaughter is never a pleasant sight, but an animal killed as swiftly as possible is certainly preferable.

The impending extinction of sharks alone is more than enough justification for ending finning, however, I agree with you there.

City council in Nanaimo just banned shark fins. Funny thing is I don't know any place in Nanaimo that sells it.

This is the third finning thread. There were a lot of opnions exchanged in the other thread but mainly most of us said it doesn't have any benefits to the environment, neither to health.

I posted this video on my FB with the following message: It's shark week, so why not consider finning for a moment? I am an animal lover, but I am also a human, so I eat all sorts of animals. What I am against is cruelty to animals, and wasteful consumption. And nothing AFAIK is more cruel and wasteful than finning sharks. I'm no "activist" and I won't push any 'agenda' on people. Just putting it out there.

Nothing wrong with putting the information out there for all to see. I was recently at a wedding and declined the shark fin soup. Someone at the table asked, and we just stated that we think it's wasteful and harmful and left it at that. I'm not going to try to convince people to think along the same lines as me, but the info needs to be put out there, because a lot of people don't even know. If they don't care, well that's their thing, fine.

i personally have no idea how it is currently being enforced right now. Perhaps use some of the enforcement funds to help the fisherman transition to a new kind of job/industry. I'm sure no one is out to hurt sharks for enjoyment. They just want to put food on the table, and possibly have a more comfortable life. I just wonder what would happen, when they crack down too hard on them. What the fisherman/finners would do for a living?

I don't have too much feelings for the sharks, i'm very anthropocentric
yes, i'm also no to shark finning. Not exactly sure if banning would achieve that goal, or how we can come up with a better method.

You need to watch meet your meats!

At any rate, humans do horrible things to all animals including other humans. You either turn a blind eye, or become a full activist and become vegan!

i know this is a bit aside forthe topic, but both being a hardcore foodie and Christian, stewardship is a issue that is very near and dear to me. Some people say sharks don't feel the drowning, (I believe this is something that is still under debate)

What i do know is that one of the reasons i am against finning is that so much is wasted.

So what is wasted in a domestic farm animal?
My Chinese people eat offal (the culinary term for internal organs and "garbage parts".
But we don't eat THAT much.
Does the rest just go into hot dogs and chicken nuggets?

Yes, and that gets eaten too. And even after all that you get pet food, etc.

^^SkinnyPupp gets it.

I created this thread because it's Shark Week, which has the potential to spark an interest in sharks among people who are normally completely apathetic towards finning.

I've already watched those videos

I'm a vegetarian, because I'm uncomfortable with the practices in slaughter houses and at factory farms. Slaughter houses are not pleasant places, but within Canada the majority do place a good deal of importance on minimizing the suffering of the animals they process.

Would you eat meat that is sustainably and ethically slaughtered?

Does this also mean you don't eat the Orange/White Atlantic farmed salmon in our local sushi joints?

i think the biggest single thing people forget about sharks in general is they are not farmed. cows, chickens, ducks, almost all of our major meat products are either bread and raise to be slaughtered or in the case of wild fish, many are regulated. so the cruelty is one thing but the massive over fishing of sharks compared to their ability to repopulate is what will ultimately be the biggest problem. it won't take much longer to really hurt the ecosystem if we continue to fin sharks and such an alarming rate.
