There's a treasure chest in Sanctuary near the teleport that you can unlock with the gold key and get some purple loot based on your level. Don't open it with your lower level characters else you waste your gold key.
You get 1 gold key for creating a SHIFT account and linking it to your game. You get more by following them on twitter/facebook. The keys they post are only good for 1-2hrs before they expire.

That's why you add them to twitter and get the shift codes to get more keys. I used mine, and now have...three? I think.
But I've been really lucky with the slot machines, so it doesn't matter that much for me.

i realized it and tried exiting without saving by going to the menu
now i dont have a golden key and i didnt bother to pick up those weapons either  | |
