Three suspected street racers had their driver’s licences suspended

High-end cars impounded over alleged street racing on Highway 1 through Fraser Valley
By Cheryl Chan, The Province September 24, 2012 7:49 PM

Three suspected street racers had their driver’s licences suspended and their high-end vehicles impounded after being caught racing down Highway 1 in the Fraser Valley.

A witness reported seeing four vehicles, including a 2013 Audi S5, 2013 Land Rover, and 2011 BMW 328i, going more than 130 kilometres an hour, passing other vehicles on the shoulder of the roadway, and weaving in and out of traffic through Abbotsford and Chilliwack at around 4 p.m. Saturday.

The drivers are Richmond men, aged 19 to 20. Only one driver has a valid B.C. Class 5 driver’s licence. The other two held Chinese licences valid in B.C. while they attend school.

The drivers’ behaviours are “absolutely irresponsible and putting the rest of the public at risk on the highway,” said Sgt. Peter Thiessen of the Lower Mainland District RCMP.

RCMP officers saw three of the four vehicles slow down to block traffic on the highway, said Thiessen. He said racing drivers can work together to block traffic so the racing vehicles can get a clear stretch of road.

Two of the vehicles were pulled over by officers. The third returned to the area, while the fourth fled the scene.

“It appears that a particular sector of our driving public still isn’t listening ... it appears to be the late teens and 20-somethings who aren’t getting the message.”

The drivers were charged with driving without reasonable consideration and are fined $196. Their licences were suspended for 15 days, with possible further suspensions.

Police are still trying to locate the fourth driver and vehicle.

Yeah, forgot to mention >$300 every year for 3 years. So my ONE ticket in existence, slightly excessive, middle of the day, no one around cost me like $1400. And these bitches get a little slap on the wrist.

LOL they are so rich the fine is like peenies to them.... Not to mention only one person is a BC Class liscense and only a 15 day suspension.

Do you think they care about the fine and the suspension. I bet they are back on the raod next day. Toughen up the laws. If you are caught dirving say 20km+ above the speed limit you get at least 2 year suspension and if you are using another country's driver liscense you won't be able to change to a Canadian one for at least 4 years and have to start with the learner class.

Also for any Intertional Students, Visa status they get 2 warnings. If they are caught speed over 20+km 2 times within a year they get departed back to their home country.

Toughten up the laws, fines does nothing as these people don't care. Take away what they care and they will behave.

Jesus christ man thats insane.

I know this topic has been discussed in mass recently but just today I set my cruise control at 110 going down HWY 1 in the HoV lane. People were following me the whole way as I was following others. Flow of traffic = 2 year suspension.

Still over the limit and 20kms is a lot if you think aobut it. If people are so piss off at the current speed limit talk to your local gov, mayor and have to change it to a higher speed limit.

If it is over the limit it is over the limit regardness of what people think. Just like the Stanely Cup riot tons of people are using the excuse "He smash the car so I am jsut following him or She stole a 42inch size jeans so I am just following her" Rules are rules don't like thme, voice your concerns or stick with it or face the fines.

Does the punishment fit the crime in this case?

I'm not arguing that 20km/h isn't against the law but 2 year suspension? I hope you're just using it as an example of stiffer fines/penalty's rather than your actual suggestion.

I wasn't aware of the details from the other thread on this just the cars and speed

IMO the 2 foreign drivers should be deported and cars seized and the one with the bc license should have his car seized as well

that'll learn em

Traffic was crazy busy on Saturday too its like everyone decided to go for a drive

Tougher fines isn't stopping people form speeding the only thing is to strip off their liscense. Hurt them where it hurts and people won't do it. You also have to look at where you are speeding as well..... 20km over a school zone is pretty bad, 20km over a highway that's at 110km might not be as bad.

Think aobut it if everyone things o is just 20km over is not big deal... soon it will turn to o 40km is not big deal..........

And when a horrible accident happens everyone is surpirse at the idots going over 40km and causing an accident.......

Give out tough puinishment and people will learn not to do it. You give them a slap on the wrist, no one is going to learn anything coz they know they can get away with it.

yeah.. 5 yrs ago I was going 70 in a 50 on a clear road and my N wasn't on. With no prior infractions, my license was suspended for 3 months and fined something like $500.

Safe to say I follow the speed limit now. If they were indeed "street racing" and blocking up traffic to do so, this is a weak fine.

Like I said before have tougher punishments.... fines does nothing.... take their cars, suspend thier liscense, deport those 2 foreign driver so people will think twice before street racing.

Ontario is a little different though. People would be utterly stupid to try any of this anywhere close to the bigger cities. But in the stretches in between, there'd hardly be any police enforcement at all. And if you are picking the right time (not necessarily during the wee hours), there would hardly be anyone on the road either.

Also, traffic flow in general is a lot faster along the 400-series highway. 120kph is the norm (even though the posted limit is 100kph), and people blow past others on the left at 140kph with a regular enough occurrence.

Spare change to these kids indeed.

We need to switch to the Finnish or Swedish formula where the ticket amount is a formula based on your income, seriousness of the incident, previous record etc.

Swedish man may pay largest speeding fine ever

Would be counter-productive... a huge number of these foreign students don't pay any tax in Canada at all... no way to tell what their income is.
