Some of you guys may remember the iphone 2G (I went down to the US to buy one) which had an aluminum rear case. Even having been in a hard case its whole life, the rear is scuffed up from dirt getting in. And my buddy bought a cheap one on CL that was dented and scratched to shit.

Why would they go back to aluminum when this is what happens?

But in all honesty, people need to realize, we are now a society where the cell phone is the most used object we own. Expect it to get damaged from simply using it.

I agree with the Otter Box comment; you can't expect them to make these things durable from the factory, because at some point parts of it would have to be replaced. Just spend $40-50 on a really good case for your $800 device and move the hell on.

There are ways to make aluminum very resistant to scratches. So much so that when you scratch with say... your fingernail, the trace you find on the metal is actually your nail rather than the metal being marred.

Similar technique has been introduced with HTC One S, although I'm not sure how far did HTC go on the process.

But I guess Apple simply didn't bother.

plain and simple Apple did a horrible, horrible, job in anodising or the dye they used was sub par

since i'll say again my nokia n8s housing is anodised aluminium and i've had it for 2 years, never used a case, dropped it a million times from different heights and onto different surfaces and the anodised aluminium is pristine no scratches/cracks/chips

if i pay a premium for a product or if i go to a reputable company/designer i expect a quality product and in this case Apple dropped the ball again

Yeah the iPhone 5 feels more like a paint job than anodizing when compared with the Nokias

I slipped it into my pocket with my keys once and it took the black off the bezel.
I assume putting the phone in my pocket with coins will do the same thing more or less.

Should of got the white...but white is too girly or me (even though I know guys who have white).

There's no point in bragging about how beautiful it is if you have to stick an ugly case over it, and all cases are ugly. Apple could've and should've done a better job with the material, and that's that.

IMO at least for the 4 the bumper improves the overall look, and a bumper is really all you need because protecting the edges is where breaks generally occur from drops etc

To people who are saying "buy a case, stop whining."
Why should someone HAVE to buy a case to make their phone stay in half decent shape visually? It's like Apple said, "everyone buys a case for it anyway, let's save a few buck on the build and half ass something."
Not the kind of thing anyone should be having to deal with within the first month, let alone out of box.

No, it's like having your friend laugh at you after you drop your phone and crack the screen saying "Dude, I told you that'd happen."

We're people. They're a company. Expect your friends to laugh at you, and expect companies to pass the buck.

THAT'S THE WAY LIFE WORKS. Want a free phone without actually buying an extended warranty when you drop it in the toilet? Great! Just don't whine when you end up with nicks in your anodized aluminum.

No problems.
The thing is, I expect my phone to be able to be in a pocket with keys and change without issues. So far coming up on 20 months with my S2 with no case on it, 7 months of travelling and many days being thrown around at work, falling off my desk/behind my computer etc. and there is not a single scratch on the screen worth mentioning and only a couple tiny knicks around the edge.

Having to watch where you put your phone all the time is annoying and one of the reasons I stopped giving a damn

Didn't they move some of their production to Indonesia for these? It's probably just poor QC from the noob workers in the factory.

Cant believe some of you guys are justifying that a few chips on the phone new in box is fine. When you buy an expensive product from a reputable company, you EXPECT it to be brand new and in PERFECT condition. Apple fucked up. End of fucking story.

The only issue I see is for the people with scratched/chipped phones right out of the box.
I don't have an iPhone5 so I cannot say how durable it is, and no one at this point can say how durable it will be within a month from normal usage.

A phone shoudn't require being "babied", but sticking any "naked" phone in the same pocket/bag/purse with coins and keys is just asking for trouble.
No phone's going to be invincible whether it's an iPhone, Android phone, BB, etc.
I'd figure that's just common sense.

I find buying a case is just like buying a bodykit for a car.
You can personalize a phone and subtly change its appearance by just putting on a case.

I don't think people in general brag about how beautiful their phones are.
Afterall, with your logic, if it's "stock", everyone's phone of same model would look exactly the same.

Some cases are thick and bulky. Built for clumsy people that don't care about the looks and just want a tank.
But there are plentiful of cases that double as a scratch/light-drop protection, and offer something visually appealing.

A lot of my iPhone friends use a thin backplate cover which seems to be quite popular.
It's thin, subtle, some possibly have artwork on the back, or provide additional grip, and it protects the corners from chips when/if dropped.
I personally use a thin bumper on my GS2. It keeps my phone slightly elevated so no contact is ever made when I lay it down on the table.
And it doesn't make my phone look ridiculously bulky at all.

And there's plenty of aluminum bumpers for the iPhone4 which in my opinion make the phone look even better than "stock".
Only problem is that I would probably be just as sad if those bumpers got chipped from a drop.

So no, I don't agree that "case-less" is the only way to go visually.

Does anyone know for sure whether iPhone 5 uses GC 1 or 2?
I don't really want to put a screen protector on my phone...it'll make me feel better if it had GC2 lol

There isn't any official literature that states it has GC2, but some sites report that it does.

Why Apple Is Killing Off The Bumper, And Why You Won’t Need A Case For Your iPhone 5 | Cult of Mac

If GC2 is available, I can't see why the iPhone5 wouldn't have it, especially since Corning developed Gorilla Glass because Steve Jobs asked them to.
