Must be rewarding work, spending hours drawing lines knowing that some other guy down the road did the same thing years before, and is now working on things like Mars, and the Oceans.

Anyone who thought the first release of Apple maps was going to be better or even equivalent to Google was smoking some good sh!t.

That said, with triple the overall revenue of Google in 2011, you can bet they are going to listen to the end users carefully, and spend the money to get things better very quickly.

I wonder how long it will take for Apple Maps to become the number one android application?

In all honesty, Apple will not listen to end users carefully, because that's not what their corporate ideology is. Their entire company revolves around the mantra "Whatever we put out is right, and we don't want anyone else to fuck with it." They changed all the iphone 4S screws to the 5star torx ones when they found out users were easily changing out backplates on the iphone4.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong, and there are benefits from a "closed system", but one thing apple will not do is listen to their customers.

Steve Jobs: You're holding it wrong.
Phil Schiller: Scratches out of the box is normal.

They will most likely continue with this way of operating, whether due to pride or arrogance, I don't know.

The (terrible) release of apple maps shows how much they've gone downhill. The only reason the closed system worked so well was that Jobs was a lunatic who was an incredible hardass about quality. With him gone, enforcing the same old company ideology is going to start to hurt the company as a whole - probably not in the short term, but as someone said in another apple thread, history seems to be repeating itself.

is there a point in covering markets/ikea?

inventory changes everday so unless they get a cam sweep regularly it's pointless.

Ikeas don't really change their layouts inside. At least the general areas are set.

The entire world is slowly moving towards augmented reality.

Computers not recognize things based on your location. Based on your preferences. My phone can show my the closest restaurants. But I have to click click click to get there, then click into the restaurant to see the map.

Then google integrated places into google maps so you can just look at a map and filter out what you want.

Soon it will be with something like Google glass where it will have a compass and GPS so It can highlight on a HUD to me what restaurants are where.

So yes, there is a point to showing the inside of a place like Ikea. It's just the first stepping stone to true AR.

"Since when will we need a map of the ocean?? Not like we can even drive there. We don't even need this novelty"

I think everyone can agree on one thing...Steve Jobs would never have allowed the maps function to be shipped.

That's hard to say. He has made other mistakes like that... the iphone 5 is very much a Steve Jobs project, and in fact they had them well before the 4S was released. It's possible that this was his last one... and you know the whole reason for going with their own maps was a vendetta against Google, so he might have done it anyway...

we'll never know though, and I suppose in the end, it doesn't matter. Although if true, things will only get worse from here for Apple. If Steve Jobs really was more than just a talking head...

I'm not sure if Phil Schiller did say that some where but if you were referring to the email that he responded to a customer then Phil Schiller didn't actually said scratches out of the box is normal.

The email said: I love my Black & Slate iPhone 5, but I've been seeing some scuffs, scratches and marks throughout the band around the phone along with many others. What should we all do? Any plans to fix this?

Phil Schiller response: Any aluminum product may scratch or chip with use, exposing its natural silver color. That is normal
