It seems like Apple is repeating history here.. they went through the same thing with Microsoft, where they hated the company so much, and what they do, that they completely lost focus and their end users suffered. Steve Jobs came back, patched things up with Bill, who invested million into Apple to help them make their comeback...
And now they are doing the same thing with Google. They had at least 1 year left on their Maps license, but they hate Google so much that they rushed out their piece of shit map software.. same result - end users suffer. They even removed the Youtube app as a default app from IOS6.
They go on to say things like "you're holding it wrong" to the people who found their design flaw (which got fixed, so I guess holding it wrong wasn't the problem after all) and now are saying that cheap anodization wearing off aluminum is "normal"...
Do they think they are invincible? Almost seems like it - people keep buying the same phones over and over, renewing 3 year contracts every year to do so. Are they invincible now, as the most valuable company in history? Only time will tell
I am sick of trying to find the Krusty Krab English Bay location on my own everytime.
A novelty at its finest.
I would be a lot more interested in detailed street view maps through crazy trails, forests, and wilderness areas. Or how about inside amusement parks, malls, and museums.
google seems to greenlight anything cool that they can come up with to improve everyone's lives (self driving cars, free/gigabit internet, etc.). what an awesome company. i'd love to work there lol.
Did Apple buy their own satellite data for the maps, or does everyone buy it from the same place? I know google bought out a company to form google maps, but where did they originally get the data?
I can imagine that if Google had a head start by a couple of years since they bought the company, and that company had a while to build their product, that if Apple were to start from scratch, it would be a significant task, you know...mapping the entire world and knowing where everything is.

They're not, that's why their stocks dropped 3% since Monday.

Technically, Apple is NOT the most valuable company in history. It's only the most valuable company in US stock history.
Back when PetroChina did its IPO, it has briefly crossed the 1 Trillion dollar mark.
But I agree. The direction Apple is taking is very similar to what brought them down more than a decade ago. Without the focus to user experience, they are just another IT company.
Looking these underwater maps is actually faster on my Galaxy Nexus than on my computer. Not sure why people continue to buy iPhones when they see Google doing stuff like this. Their innovative ability is beyond what we can comprehend, and they will do stuff with Android that will be incredible

Can somebody double check this fact tidbit for me...
But isn't the #1 downloaded app on their app store the youtube app?
The native iOS YouTube app was terrible. I always used the web app instead. Ditching native YouTube support was a good idea...let's Google make the app instead.

Apple bought 3 different mapping companies in the past few years for their map. The cartography are all done in-house for Apple.
Google Earth satellite data are from NASA and other government database such as the USGS. The 3D map that's Google is rolling out are done by their planes taking pictures of the buildings across specific cities.
Apple is also doing something similar with their 3D map. But with Apple, they bought a company that specialize in spy-in-sky. So they take high resolution cameras and fly them around town.
