Massey Tunnel set for replacement

So looks like Christy Crunch wants to waste as much of our money as she can before she's out the door

Wonder how much this will be tolled

tax dollars to build
taxed to drive

Quote:
VICTORIA (NEWS1130) - Relief is on the way for drivers south of the Fraser River.

Premier Christy Clark says the province is starting the process of replacing the George Massey Tunnel. She says her government will begin discussions with the municipalities of Richmond and Delta about replacing the decades-old tunnel.

Clark says the process could take 10 years, but the route is simply too congested and needs to be replaced.
She tells us it's too early to say whether the replacement will be a tunnel or a bridge. She also can't say whether it would be tolled.
The premier has also pledged half a billion dollars to make Highway 1 between Kamloops and the Alberta border four lanes.

The tunnel is 53 years old and counterflow lane isn't that safe; I rather they built a new one then keep fixing it.

By the time the new tunnel/bridge opens, its gonna be 65+? and with Richmond soil

A new interchange at steveston and 99 would be a godsend too...

I don't see a problem with replacing the Messy Tunnel at all. As it is, the tunnel is a major traffic bottleneck, sometimes even during non-rush hours. Whenever I come back from Tsawwassen, I also dread the repeated on-ramps / merging that they have there. Traffic volume has clearly outgrown that design.

If possible, I would also support the addition of a new bridge from Main (in Vancouver) connecting directly to Shell Road (in Richmond). The population of Vancouver, Richmond, and GVRD in general has increased significantly over the past 20+ years, but we are still stuck with the same 3 bridges that is incapable of carrying any additional volume. Then again, I seem to remember Vancouver having some sort of legislation that prevents the addition of new vehicle bridges.

Why?

For the average commuter, the fuel savings place toll fees almost at par and the significant time savings are an added benefit. For businesses that require employees to travel the major routes on company time, the time savings add up to significant labour cost reduction. I say bring on the tolls, it makes complete sense to me.

City of Delta mayor is being a prick by not approving of a change to that light. They like how the traffic is restricted into Delta.

I've never had a problem with the tunnel any time outside of rush hour. It doesn't get near the volume of HWY 1, the benefits and time/fuel saved would never come close.

Delta wants federal cash for highways - News1130

Quote:
Meanwhile the only freeway in the Lower Mainland that still has a traffic signal will continue to operate as is. The province says there's no need to replace the intersection at Highway 91 and 72nd Avenue.

An interchange was planned there under the 2005 Border Infrastructure Program but all that cash went to improvements in the Queensborough area instead. In 2009 the province had said it couldn't reach a design agreement with Delta, not wanting to include a link from 72nd to southbound Highway 91. Harvie worries that without that link, drivers will opt to use local streets.

The Mayor of Delta (Lois Jackson) is the biggest fucking idiot. I grew up in North Delta and fell victim to the goddamn 'traffic calming' measures she has taken.

She has been in power since 1999 and her number one interest is South Delta, Ladner, and Tsawwassen. She never appears to have a clue what she is doing, is a terrible speaker, and comes across as poorly educated. As Surrey, more specifically Scott Road, has expanded and grown, she has made a point of keeping the Delta side back and inefficient to commuters, citizens, and businesses.

I remember quite a few years ago she dropped over 50k to have her office ripped apart because she thought it was 'bugged' with listening devices. Turns out she had forgotten about conversations she had with people....I wish I could find that news article.

She is an absolute fucking nitwit!

The objective is to use less government cash and use more private loans to build it. The tolls are used to pay off the private loans and when that is done, the infrastructure becomes fully owned by the government and then they "should" be removing the tolls (a la Coquihalla Highway).

I personally use that tunnel maybe twice a year, so why should I be paying the same amount as someone that uses it daily?

issues i have with tolling is that the money never goes to the right place....you think it'll be used for infrastructure or health? or do you think it will be used for executive pay raise?

Vancouver is pretty much the only city I see don't toll drivers, paying extra few dollars is fine as long as it really relieves the traffic congestion and have better roads.

Next, please build a skytrain, so it goes from no.3 road to new west / Surrey. Vancouver needs more public transit than more new roads.

After taking a class in Municipal Finance at school I have less of an issue about tolls as a means for paying parts of large capital projects. Public Private Partnerships and user fees are the way to go which is what they did with Port Mann.

Gotta get that money for infrastructure from somewhere! Plus, if you don't use the tunnel or Port Mann, etc. then you don't have to pay for it as much from your taxes.

I used the tunnel for 4 years straight every day and it sooooo needs to be replaced in the next decade. Accidents everyday, massive congestion, the time has come.

The Gateway design always had a bottleneck at the tunnel. You can't move all the traffic around everywhere else more efficiently and then have a big area where it sits. That was publicly announced way back.

As soon as the Goldenears opened with tolls, you knew that Port Mann and Patullo would be next. You can't have a free bridge sitting next to a pay bridge. That's why no one is currently using the Goldenears and we the taxpayers are having to subsidize the private partners. So you bring Port Mann online...and kill New West with traffic. They may mitigate that by having an introductory rate, but New West is already slammed with afternoon traffic. They want to replace the patullo with a 6 lane bridge, which turns NW into a major highway with a city around it, which I vehemently oppose. That 6 lane bridge also has that little added advantage of being the magic number of lanes that are required to have tolls in BC. So the answer to the Goldenears/Port Mann issue is to toll the Patullo as well..which will push the problem to the Alex Fraser.

I would much rather them rip the goddamned Patullo out, rather than have a 6 lane highway through my town.
