Shes not wrong, i went down to the OC afterwards to do some shopping for the wife and even down there, there was homeless weirdos hanging around the beach and malls. How dare you pollute my airspace peasant?
I'll be there in November. I am counting on my training/desensitization (aka time spent living in gastown) to put me at ease.

Vancouver isn't considered as a metropolis city and as such why should we be having metropolis problems?

Agreed that homelessness, real estate crisis, and general unaffordability is up everywhere in Western societies (US, Canada, Europe and Australia). Why is it so fucked and where else is there to go LOL?

This was kind of my reaction walking in the supposed red light district / homeless area of Osaka. It's not as bad as Vancouver, so I didn't notice them. But other Japanese locals wouldn't dare to go there. Kinda shows how fucked Vancouver is imo.

How many HKers do you know that don't define Vancouver as a major city? I know many who also think that Vancouverites are sheltered in thinking that Vancouver is a "big city", and frankly I agree.

Metropolis is like HK, Tokyo, LA, NYC, Toronto etc.

We definitely don't have the infrastructure to be a metropolitan city. Hell our metropolis shuts down every time there's a DUSTING of snow and everything goes to shit. World class city everyone. Round of applause.

EDIT: TIL - StatsCan considers Deadmonton as a Metropolis.

EDIT 2: Turns out each country defines metropolis differently, hence the very different opinions from Asia. Generally, Asia seems to be an area having a population of 1 million or more, but has further restrictions on the structure of administrative divisions. Whereas Canada has a definition of 100,000 people and surprisingly on a lower standard, the US's minimum is 50,000 people.

its not a 'mega' city but i still think its a major city.
a lot of major concerts still make their rounds through here.
as long as that's true then i still think we're up there.

LOL so snow removal is a hallmark of a world class metropolis now? Pretty sure if it snowed in Tokyo, HK, LA everything would shut down too. Almost as if cities budget and prioritize services that are most likely to occur in their climatic zone.

Stop, please just stop. Enough cosplaying Hondaracer.

You can judge the importance of a city for global commerce by seeing how many international airlines fly to it.
Population wise YVR punches above its weight and has all major european/asian airlines serve it year round. Even more than seattle which you’d think would have more due to famous companies headquartered there. Compare that with calgary which only has KLM and occasional budget German low cost airline in the summer.

Thus as chinese people like to categorize, vancouver “tier-1” city la~

There's actually a methodology around classifying global cities:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global...search_Network

In this classification, Vancouver is decidedly NOT in the top tier but is a Beta - (cuck) city with peers like Manchester, Denver, Changsha, Seattle and Philadelphia

I joke that I’m Vancouver’s biggest hater. But cities aren’t meant to be compared like sports teams - each has pros and cons.

Vancouver feels less about homelessness (actually calmer this year) and more about being a resort town: high costs, service jobs, and not much space for young people to stumble, explore, or take risks.

And Hong Kong as a model city? Strange choice. Jobs shifting away, housing in freefall, car-centric planning, and inequality that makes London look gentle. Fun for a first trip, yes. A great metropolis? Not really.

Dating, though - that part I’ll admit is easier unless you're trying to actually woo an island gal. NT is easy.

Vancouver will never be a Tier 1 city and that's okay.

We should just cherish the fact that we have natural beauty which has created enough of a demand for an airport with good connections around the world. If you want to experience a world class city, we can fly direct to nearly every one Tier 1 city in the planet.

I honestly wish we had better public transit though.

We just won? The geography lottery. Happen to have mountains and sea but also fucked by them cuz we ain't infilling and can't build on the mountains. Being coastal usual brings milder weather, ports, fish. But also down side, floods, etc

Funny enough, this link shows the specific legal definition of a "metropolis", as Canada has the minimum requirement set to 100,000 - 6 largest being Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa, Calgary, and Edmonton.

I mean I don't actually have this problem because my city of residence actually plans for snow - shocker I know. Imagine having the side streets plowed first thing and on a consistent basis. Imagine having roads salted. Wanna hear something crazy? Potholes get filled same day here lol.

Can't say the same about the City of Vancouver LMAO.

Considering we all know CLIMATE CHANGE IS REAL, since it shouldn't really snow in Richmond, yet it's snowed in Richmond consistently for the past decade or more.. maybe they should yenno... budget for it.

This is a picture of Tokyo (23 wards) overlaid on Metro Vancouver. They've got a great public transit system (only tried JR rail tho and whatever goes to Osaka). It's definitely not as easy for us to travel around all these munis as it is for Tokyo to. That said if you lived in DT Vancouver, you can pretty much get to almost all of the "DT" places on this overlay except for Delta.

The homeless in Tokyo/Osaka just look like bums or people who are very impoverished but nothing to be threatened about.

I’ve literally never had a problem getting anywhere in the city when it snows due to the amount of snow on the roads, it’s the fucking retards that drive on it that are the problem. North van is on the side of a mountain, just either get winter tires or don’t drive. You should see how much snow is on the ground in edmonton for the entire 6 months of winter it’s 10x as much as here. Snow removal isn’t the issue that is some detriment it’s being made out to be.
Dallas literally lost power for weeks when it snowed there lol.

Agree with West, snow isn't the issue, the idiots who don't know how to drive and should have stayed home are.

I have done my fair share of idiot things in the snow. And there is the whole once every few years where we get a melt and freeze and everything is a sheet of ice to contend with. Even I choose to stay home when it's a sheet of ice because I don't need to head to the office. Groceries can wait a few days, there's enough food at home.

Man I spent some time in LA and you start to miss the weather seasons. Yeah in the beginning you're like fuck yeah always sunny and no need for winter tires but then you start missing the rain/clouds/snow especially when california goes into a prolonged drought. But at least LA and even HK has some seasonal changes, fucking singapore is right on the equator and is HOT 24/7 and no change to sunrise/sunset times. I'd go nuts living there.

Anyway Vancouver best place on earth
