I have had two GoPro Hero HD cameras since 2010 and never used either until a few weeks ago.

First time out my inexperience cost me a GoPro on the highway (recovered but not before it was run over). The last couple of weekends I have had a TOTAL blast with the other one!!! The coolest thing is that the GoPro is NOT just an "action sports" camera. The creative element is amazing.

I can't even imagine how amazing the newer models are.

GoPro's New HERO4 Session is 50% Smaller and 40% Lighter Than the HERO4

Ronin 07-06-2015 10:21 AM

Meh. It's $499 and is basically a smaller low-end Hero. No 4k, no 240FPS, just stripped down and smaller.

wished it was entry level or somewhat in the 350 range to make it worthwhile because the size is great.

That ball joint mount doe....

Image quality pales in comparison to GoPro 4 Silver though, and we haven't even started to consider the lack of higher video resolution modes (that are present in the GP4 Silver) yet. :heckno:

For myself, I don't particularly care for video resolutions higher than 1080. However, video quality is very important to me. Before seeing the above comparison, I was quite interested in the unit. However, having seen it now, I think I will go back to save up and look for a GP4 Silver instead...

wow that session 4 is really lacking. Then again, for a "first gen", it is what it is

still happy with my 3+ black.

By comparison the Sony Action Cam mini is a way better option.

Only in comparison to the session. Image quality of the Sony Action cam across a wide range of lighting is sub-par when compared to a Hero 3+, Hero 4 silver and/or Hero 4 black.

Was excited about the Session, due to the form factor, but image quality is King and I won't be able to use it as is (if that video review is accurate). We shoot in-car action for TV and for web-videos, pretty much always set at 1080p-30. Session looked like a great option on the specs...but will have to try one ourselves to see if it's really as bad as that review video suggests.

$500 is a steep premium for SFF
sony are better suited for helmets anyways

You need to try out the X1000V. The problem is that people grab the old AS30, or AS100 and try to compare it to the Hero 4 black.

Also as twitchy zero pointed out I prefer the form factor of the action cam over the go pro for most things. I hate that stupid teletubby look when you rock a go pro snowboarding, whereas with the action cam you can just mount it right on the side of your helmet perfectly.

Pretty much the only place that the action cam is not suited for mounting is a chest mount. Which I actually solved by using their backpack shoulder mount when I bike which works even better than a chesty.

CCA-Dave 07-08-2015 09:47 AM

In one of the series we cover, we're required to use GoPro as they're a sponsor of the series, in the others we're free to use what we like. All Motorsports, only rarely do we mount to helmets. We've got two(?) X1000V's which just sit collecting dust. If I recall correctly, they had tonnes of promise, but were sidelined because they can't handle the dynamic range of being mounted inside a car (super dark dash, super bright through windshield) or the lower light levels as dusk begins and turns into night. In those situations, the Hero4 is superior.

But yes, for mounting to a helmet I can see the benefit of the form factor for sure.

Any deals right now for the 3+black or the new 4?
Thanks

twitchyzero 07-16-2015 09:47 PM

I saw costco has the 3+black for $389?? Should I bite or cough up a little more for the 4?

Port Man 07-18-2015 10:29 AM

Get the 4 silver! Its wicked, love it for taking videos riding downhill at whistler. Check out @remymetailler on instagram for his videos, he does crazy high speed runs through the trees

ForbiddenX 07-18-2015 07:51 PM

Is the Hero4 worth the extra over just the entry level GoPro? Thinking of getting one to bring on vacations but not sure if it's worth it to get the Hero4 or not

twitchyzero 07-18-2015 10:56 PM

for the LCD, yes. If you're gonna edit them the higher res is nice, slow-mo is a bonus.
on a budget i'd rather just buy the xiaomi yi for $70 vs the cheapest GP at $150

Doubl3_H 07-19-2015 09:29 AM

Might just end up getting a xiaomi yi, Can't justify $500+ in my situation

I was seriously considering a Xiaomi Yi, and then I came across the following article:

Xiaomi's affordable Yi action camera versus the GoPro Hero

I mostly just use my action cam for videos, and it seems to me that the Xiaomi unit leaves something to be desired. The price is certainly still very attractive, so I am still on the fence.

The biggest grip to that review was the lack of a waterproof casing which is another $15-20 bucks. After that you can use most GoPro mounts/accessories.

I can live without any settings / indicators, and have to use the App.
The colour on the Yi seems better too.

So the only thing is the shakiness. And even that is YMMV.
