The serial key that Microsoft email you will only be valid by upgrading from Window 7. So if you are doing a fresh install on a computer that does not run Window 7 then the serial key would not work | Quote:

Here's my experience...
DOWNLOAD & UPGRADE
My PC shipped with Win 7 Home (not sure if it was 32 or 64 bit), before I downloaded the Windows 8 promo I wiped my HD and installed Win 7 Pro x64 but did not enter a key. The copy of Win 7 Pro x64 I was running was not activated and utilizing the grace period. Next I downloaded the Windows 8 promo, saved the ISO file and also chose the option to create a USB key installer. Booted from USB key, entered Win 8 key and installed, was not prompted to enter any Win 7 key. After reboot Windows 8 was automatically activated.
Also the copy that was downloaded/installed was Win 8 Pro x64, not sure if that is based off of my hardware or the OS that I was running when I downloaded the promo.
CLEAN INSTALL
Just wiped my hard drive using Hiren's boot CD, then booted from Win 8 USB installer, entered Win 8 key and installed. Not prompted for Win 7 key, after initial configuration Win 8 was NOT activated. Tried to activate manually, prompted to enter 8 key again, key accepted, received the following error "key can only be used for upgrading, not for clean installations".
UPGRADE FROM CLEAN INSTALL.
Since I couldn't activate the clean install of Windows 8 I decided to reinstall over top, inserted USB installer, ran Setup.exe and entered key, chose "Don't keep anything" and installed. Once complete Windows 8 was automatically activated.
Seems like the promo key won't work to activate clean installs but will work to activate any upgraded OS, even if the original OS is NOT-activated, doesn't matter if it is Win 7 or Win 8. Not sure if upgrading from XP works...

Yeah, looks like it's asking for a product key from Win 7 now. Won't accept a valid key from a few years back either.
