Upgrade to Windows 8 for $14.99

I know there's a separate Win 8 thread but I thought it'd get more traffic here.

This site gives you a promo code cutting the cost from $60 to $16 (you need to enter your real email to get the code). Enjoy.

Go to https://www.windowsupgradeoffer.com
Windows 7 PC purchase information
Date of purchase *Make up any date within last 2 months.
Name of retailer * Just say whatever retailer.
PC Brand *I typed in Carbide 500r
PC Model * I typed in random anything.

That is all it requires, no receipt verification is needed. Anyone can upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $14.99. It gives you a promo code, and you download and install from there.

Successful Windows OS's seem to skip generations. 95, XP, 7...

I'll probably pass on 8 for now.

vista felt unresponsive and i came across some compatibility issues. vista also seems to be great at making simple tasks difficult.

whatever, i haven't tried windows 8 at all. i mean, it might be amazing for all i know.

Use it for a few days. It's weird the first few hours but after a while things start to make sense. I actually like it a lot.

Since there is no harm getting this code.. I'd say wait till christmas or so before actually using it. This way, the dev's have time to see what bug fixes there needs to be done and release updates.

Just how I see it.

I am probably gonna upgrade. My PC is due for a re-format anyway, and would be nice to upgrade and go legit.

My friend in IT says it is more stable and less resource intensive than Windows 7 overall, although it takes a bit to get used to it is much more streamlined and useful.

There is actually very little change to the actual desktop of Win 7 -- you retain it, but what it does is add another menu in place of the Win Start button. It's kinda like Android where you have the layer with programs you choose, and the underlying layer with everything else etc.
It is very, very quick. I had doubts about it initially but got the hang of it within half an hour. The app store is in its infancy for sure, but seems encouraging. I'd say Microsoft hit the nail on the hammer this time around.

Can't seem to wrap my head around the fact that Win8 was designed with tablets/touchscreen input in mind. While it works flawlessly on a tablet (ie. Surface), after trying it out on a standard desktop with a mouse and keyboard, it just doesn't feel right.

Maybe it'll take some time to get used to, but for power users like myself, it may taken more than just time.

+1 yeah... still not used to the awkward "tablet-esque" design + mouse/keyboard

Question for those who've bought in. Can you get the code and not upgrade immediately? I like the price, but I don't want to switch over just quite yet.

Yes. I downloaded it and 'saved' install files to USB drive.

you guys should just make the switch

its literally just a much faster running Windows 7 with the added new start menu that you don't have to use at all if you don't want to but as you try it out you'll end up wanting to just stick with the start menu instead of the Desktop mode

and Graeme the offer for purchasing windows @ $14 is available until January 31st but there's nothing that tells when that discount code expires if at all

and you can download windows 8 onto a usb stick and not install it

Hmm. Hopefully a few days of consideration won't doom me to not receive the discount.

I think some people are bashing it more so due to bandwagon without actually trying it or giving time to "learn" it.
How many of you have even installed it and used it for more than an hour instead of making a judgement
from just reading about it or watching videos of how the interface is different.

I've only tested it a bit so far at NCIX, but my first impressions were a start page overlaid on top of windows 7.
It's not like there's no desktop mode. All the shortcuts are still the same.

I understand if some want to hold off cause bugs usually surface within the first few months when a new OS is released.
That's a smart thing to do, but I wouldn't write off the OS so soon yet.

for those that have made the purchase

Don't forget to register for Windows Media Centre (its free until January)

Add features - Microsoft Windows <<< give microsoft your email and they'll send you a code to get Media Centre for your Windows 8 Pro

I'll go ahead and try the new Win8. I think this is pretty much the direction MS is going in the future and it's just matter of time before people need to get used to it. Nobody ever really likes it when the new interface drastically changes but a lot of times it's not necessarily because it's a bad interface, but we're just too used to the old one. I'll try to be neutral and give it a shot.

Yes you can. The downloaded program lets you create a bootable USB or DVD.
Fresh clean installs allowed.
