Honestly, even looking at the worst pictures, it doesn't seem all that bad.

I was thinking it was going to be a New Orleans grade disaster. 26 person death toll? In an area that has 30 million people? Those sound like standard numbers to me on a regular night. In fact, there was probably less deaths than a usual day since most people were off the roads.

so everyone has had notice of this for a few weeks... and alot didn't decide to ditch town or even store cars elsewhere, obviously some did, but seeing cars in the streets...

also, just out of curiosity, how does ICBC work with natural disasters? i couldnt imagine them shelling out new cars for thousands of people ???

i hope everyones ok though, things can be replaced, lives cant

there is no such thing as an earthqake > 10.0. that's not how the Richter scale works.

^His statement is possible if the quake is caused by an asteroid hitting the earth. Go look up the chicxulub impact that happened 65 million years ago (an event apparently responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs).

Also, scientists use the 'Moment Magnitude Scale' (MMS) now. And theoretically, there is no upper limit on the Richter scale. There was a huge quake in Chile in 1960 that registered 9.5 and that's probably as close as we've come to 10 in modern history.

Took one course in earth sciences on natural disasters in my undergrad and I knew it would someday come in handy, lol.

The scale can go above 10, since the scale is a logarithmic measure of seismic energy. However, an earthquake at 10 has never been observed, and one higher than that would be extremely improbable given that the increase between 10 and 11 is quite sizeable.

View Screen Capture

People in California get so wigged out about earthquakes, but the fact is, they don't even make the 8.5+ list. Even Japan only makes the list four times, as does Alaska. Indonesia and Chile are the places you really want to avoid if you don't like 'quakes.

The 2004 quake that triggered the tsunami? quickly googled it and according to this article it was 9.1
