UBC alumna charged for allegedly selling U-Passes on Craigslist A 25-year-old former University of British Columbia student has been charged with two counts of fraud for allegedly buying U-Passes from students and then selling them for a profit on Craigslist. Betty Sze Yu Wong of Vancouver bought the transit passes from students at four post-secondary institutions for a low price then resold them at a substantial profit, Transit Police said in a news release. Police say more charges could be laid against those students who sold their passes. The three-zone U-Passes are built into tuition fees at many colleges and universities in the Lower Mainland. Students pay $30 per month for a pass that would otherwise cost $151. It is illegal for anyone to buy or use a U-Pass that was not issued to them. Wong is due in court Dec. 14, 2012. They made it mandatory for students to pay for U-passes....what did they expect. This is been happening since the beginning. LOL I agree with 1exotic...all this over a few dollars. |

Have you been to UBC lately? |
If you go onto the UBC facebook groups at the start of a month I'd say every other post is selling a Upass. This is nothing new. |
Selling U-passes is certainly nothing new but facing potential charges certainly is. |
c'mon...i'm sure people on here know others or themselves have used friend's upass before. The worst penalty is having it confiscated...rarely does it show up on your academic records..but going to court for it seems pretty extreme. Maybe if she didn't try to flip them for profit this wouldn't have happened. |
Breaking News! An Asian person is involved in shady business dealings. Come on. We all do it. Who's it really hurting? |
Guess Transit Police/Security just realized that Craigslist is a marketplace for anything...including selling bus passes  "Drennan says the fraud was discovered when members of the Crime Reduction Unit discovered U-Passes for sale on Craigslist." |
It's one thing if you're a student hoping to sell the U-pass because you have no use for it. But she was an alumni who was allegedly buying them from students at 4 different schools then re-selling purely for profits. Makes sense the cops want to charge her. Cops don't bother charging the kid with a joint in his pocket. Instead they want to charge the guy making profits by dealing. Same thing here. |
She messed with the wong people :troll: |
could she still be charged if she claims that she gave them as gifts, if they can't prove money changed hands, would she be cleared? hmm |
