If you answer yes to wanting to use different lenses, then you can look at a dslr or mirrorless ilc. If she associates "good photo quality" with a dslr, don't buy one because you'll likely post it on CL shortly after buying.

If you really want to go the dslr route, you should think to buy used to see how you like that type of system before committing money further.
She have used a DSLR before and the pictures she took with it are pretty good.

The issue I always have with DSLR is that is so heavy to carry around and honestly the only time we will use is when we go on vacation which is like once to twice a year so it seems like a waste to spend over $500 + on a camera. A few friend of mine who got the DSLR honestly say they don't use it much anymore being so heavy to carry around. Not to mention you look a tourist with it lol.

Otherwise the A6000 is now still a fairly hot buy now that Sony finally gave it XAVC-S 50Mb/s in the latest firmware update. And the A7000 apparently delayed till 2016

yep I'm shocked XAVCS is now on the A6K, there's no room for a replacement/upper tier this year unless they add 4K and IBIS...which would likely shoot up to $1000 anyways...might as well buy the A7ii with that budget.
Friend was looking at the E-PL5 w/ 14-42 for $399.
Thoughts on that camera? I understand it's around 3 years old. But the reviews seem quite solid.

I bought my girlfriend the epl5 it's a great little camera. I didn't care for the a5000 when I played around with it. Part of it may be I was already invested in Micro Four Thirds coming from Panasonic. But I just found the Olympus UI a bit easier to use as well.

I'm not sure what her experience with mirrorless is, but you're getting identical IQ if you look at a comparable entry-level DSLR but you get the smaller package. If she really wanted an interchangeable lens camera for travel, I'd definitely look at mirrorless ILCs as being your number one priority. Of course, that's assuming she really needs to switch lenses.

Unless you're buying full frame or a high speed sports camera like a 7D Mark II, DSLRs are pointless. They're just bigger and heavier with no other benefit over a mirrorless body.

Still a crop sensor but twice the weight.

i'd say look into the system of lenses or adapters etc. before deciding on a body. if u don't plan to buy more lenses, get a premium p/s like lx100 or rx100. had a very similar convo a long time ago and the person was happy with the lx7 until now still.

having said that, i have a lot of olympus stuff and buying refurb when they have 20-25% off direct from olympus is the way to go

Point and shot camera broke on my last trip and saw the Nikon coolpix S7000 on sale. Try it for a bit and man it so bad compare to old camera. Just wonder is it worth it have my old camera fix?

Fixing a point and shoot? Don't bother. If it isn't under warranty, it'll cost you more just to fix it compared to buying a new one. Perfectly capable point and shoots are available for under $300 like the Nikon S9900.

On the other hand, point and shoots are useless now that most phones have equivalent image quality.

The only advantage that p&s have over smart phones is the optical zoom. But most people using p&s / smart phone cameras probably don't care about this capability all that much...

I notice a pretty big difference in the picture quality between my p&s and from my phone 5s. Especially when I zoom in also when printing 4 * 6 the picture looks a lot better from my p&s.

debating on backing at the 375 PD dream level:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...ef=fundedtoday

what to know what you guys think before i do?
For me i think that spending a little more on a bag to carry equipment that costs thousands is worth it. But then again there might be cheaper options out there i don;t know about. It does look stylish though.
TIA

The bag is built for DSLRs. I'll wait for them to make a mirrorless version.

Wow, that actually looks like a pretty practical bag. Would make a great replacement for my 7 MDH. Hard to tell how much padding it has though.

So I ended up going in on the Kickstarter for the EDM and it arrived today. Smaller than I thought it would be. It actually feels physically smaller than my Crumpler 7 Million Dollar Home thought it was able to fit everything in with room to spare. The Crumpler seems to have a deeper base but narrower width, while the EDM has a narrower base but wider width. I'm undecided on which one I want to keep at the moment. Will give the EDM a few days on the road to figure out how functional it actually is.

I tried it out last week and thought the opposite...it's even bigger than I thought!

Fine for DSLRs...but hotdog down a hallway for mirrorless systems.

Hah, I guess compared to a Crumpler 7MDH it felt smaller. Definitely geared towards the DSLR crowd though. I've got a 6D with 24-70, a 17-40 and a 70-200 f2.8 and there's a little bit of room to spare.

Not a fan of the 60D myself, but this looks like a very good deal:

Canon 60D w/ 24mm f/2.8 STM

If you have some patience and the time, you can probably even turn a small profit from it.

Sony Alpha A7 Body - $398 USD
Sony Alpha a7 Mirrorless Digital Camera ILCE7/B

It's not the latest one, 2.5 yrs old, but nevertheless a smoking price for a FF mirrorless.

Very tempting. The only m4/3 lens I own is the 12-40 2.8 pro. Although I should technically be saving my $$ to get some lenses for my 6d.
