Hey guys new in DSLR world. However I came a cross a really good deal...

All of it are brand new

Canon T5i Body Only - $419
Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM - $349

What do you guys think?

For the Lens is it really worth it to buy a filter or lens hood is enough? Will the filter degrade the image quality?

i think it depends what filter but i dont think any will degrade it. Most ppl use it more for protection. But a hood would be nice use to have one on my tokina 11-16 and will never use it without anymore haha

Don't put cheap glass in front of expensive glass. I only use filters that have a purpose, like NDs and such. UV or whatever filters are just things camera stores sell suckers to make margin.

Use a lens hood. Serves a purpose and protects your lenses just fine.

Looks like a great price to me. I'd just pick it up, because the more you debate the more shots you miss.

And I always find that if you buy the wrong thing or want to upgrade, there's always a market for used gear, so you're not always losing much by buying first and thinking later

Late pass, you probably bought it already. But that is a great deal! I just bought the t5i bundled with the 18-55 kit lens and another not so good one for 1g and I seriously LOVE that camera.

Though I don't have much comparison, the only other camera I played around with is the 60D. But the t5i is awesome.

Until Dec. 2nd, Adobe is offering their Photoshop Photography Program (notably Photoshop CC, Lightroom 5 among a couple of other things like 20GB of free storage) for 9.99/month. You need to sign up for a year though.

If you have LR and CSx, this likely isn't for you. But given the cost of PS CS6 is north of 600, if you needed it this seems like a pretty good deal, without taking into account LR.

^^ Admittedly I haven't taken a thorough look into Photoshop CC, but how exactly does it work? It seems to me that it is cloud-related, but I don't supposed it is entirely cloud-based, is it?

For those already using LR, don't forget that the upgrade price to the latest version is only $70 or $80, so it is still cheaper to just pay for that upgrade licence instead of subscribing to this discounted plan.

IIRC, Photoshop CC is basically full Photoshop installed to your computer. There are cloud components to it, but the program runs locally. You get all upgrades going forward as you would upgrading from one version of CS to another. You also don't need to be connected to the internet every day. Adobe will do a check every 120 days I believe, so as long as you have internet access within 120 days there shouldn't be any issues.

And you're right about LR. I was really thinking about this, but since I just bought LR5 for less than $100, and my only use for PS is panorama merging and removing items from photos here and there, I don't really feel that even at the discounted cost, it's not really worth it for me.

Not sure how hot of a deal this is but I bought it.
Costco:
Canon Family Portrait Camera Accessory Kit
$199.99 for the following:

Comes with a
Manfrotto MKC3-H01 Tripod (Amazon selling this for 89.99)
Canon 50mm f/1.8 (this lens is about 110.00)
Gary Fong Puffer (20 or 30 dollars)
Infrared remote for your Canon camera (30-40 dollars i think)
a Canon sling bag (pretty good little bag)

IMO this was a pretty good bundle for guys like me, who don't own too much stuff and shoot only casually! Remember, with Costco if you break anything you can always return it after 2 years (3 with manager approval)!

I bought mine at the Richmond Costco so I think stores will carry this... not just online

That's basically the 40th Anniversary Bundle with the GF Puffer. Pretty good price indeed.

What type of camera are you looking for? Budget? There are already "pre-Black Friday" sales on sites like Dell.ca for older Rebels. If you're looking for FF, you likely won't have super crazy deals.

In that case, have you looked at Craigslist? The 60d alone could generally be had in the $500 - $600 range locally in the used market, with some high mileages one occasionally coming in under $500. The shutter's expected duty cycle for the 60d should be around 100k (actuations), so make sure you take that into account when shopping for a used body.

Yep CL is your best bet especially if you don't necessarily need it bnib.

As for brand new, I haven't seen anything yet. You can track prices here:

While true about the MSRPs, once you decide to sell the total bundle offer for the remaining stuff ends up being close to buying everything separately and used.

Personally I would just pick up the 60D, and fill in the other $400 with one of the many 17-50ish 2.8 variants from Tamron or Sigma. That's probably a better use of $1000+.

Here's a good deal, with 60d, OEM grip, 50 1.8, Sigma 18-50 kit, bags, cards, reader, remote for $850:

Canon 60D w/ Lots of Extras

That's not how I see it. I see a 60D with a worthless lens, a 50 and some other stuff that doesn't add up to $1000. The 16GB card is $10 from NCIX and that bag isn't more than $50.

I have at least two friends that asked me for recommendations on cameras when they bought their first DSLR and thought that the 18-200 was a good deal because it was $700 but it covered such a huge range.

Then they wonder why they can't take pictures in low light or why their JPEGs look so mushy. Everyone tries that lens. Everyone regrets it once they see the sharpness of the $99 50 1.8.

Steer clear and spend your money on better lenses.

^To add to the above, if you're looking at getting a 18-200 and don't plan on changing lenses, need the entire range evenly, and plan on taking pictures in the dark, you're better off getting a compact or a superzoom.

Like this one for $1300:

The Sony RX10 Review ? One amazing Superzoom! | STEVE HUFF PHOTOS

Otherwise, the whole point of getting a dslr aside from IQ is the versatility that different lenses offer. So if one doesn't plan on changing lenses, then there's really no point buying into a dslr system.
