Valve Steam Box Confirmed

Steam OS based on Linux with Big Picture Mode to rival next-gen XBOX and Playstation. It's supposed to be a turnkey solution so it won't be very open-sourced and will be shipped from different manufacturers. It'll compliment the next-gen Source engine nicely

I hope they allow crossplatform multiplayer with conventional PC...especially for fps games

you cant play competative anything on a large screen,

thought he would make it smart tv compatible so that steam would work off of all new tvs for some basic games just to get the average joe interested in steam

Well if they allow you to play the games you own on your steam account...it would be great. I would play non-1st person/RTS games on it.

its head honcho confirmed the company is making hardware for the living room...which is what the Steam Box was rumoured to be so not sure why I got failed.

"valve confirms steam box" will also give you lots of hits on google news.

Because nothing is confirmed. It's the same speculation that has been going on for years.

They still haven't confirmed anything from Valve themselves. When he references "our hardware" he is referring to turnkey products powered by Valve software. In any case I don't really trust the source so that is what caused a lot of confusion...

As far as specs go it'll likely be similar to PS4 running an AMD SOC like the A10 or something similar. Otherwise the prices would creep into PC territory which isn't good console buyers that hover around the $300-400 area.

I'm a little bit skeptical.

It would be great for platformers and action games, some of which are available on other platforms. I don't see this as ideal platform for competitive FPS since it's annoying to play on your couch with a keyboard and mouse. It's possible, just annoying. If you use a controller you'll be very handicapped. Call of Duty and Halo account for a lot of game sales for MS and Sony.

Indie fans would love it. Sony and MS have been picking it up (especially the Vita) with indie developers so this would be an interesting battleground.

If you're buying one to sit on your desk, you're just buying a computer that doesn't do computer things.

Why do you think you have to use a kb/mouse with this? It is going to have a custom OS with a UI similar to those on modern consoles.

It will likely have both controller and keyboard support just like the current client. My comment was directed at FPS where keyboard and mouse works very well and controller users are at a disadvantage.

Have to admit, I had my doubts when this was posted last year... This rumor has existed for at least 5 or 6 years, so to see if finally coming true is

I don't think it will be feasible as a standalone gaming PC system until most of the games are native though. But once they do... This pretty much proves that XBox One, Wii U, and PS4 are the last first party gaming consoles we'll ever see.

i'm more interested in the steamOS streaming feature
that means I can play demanding games on my old HTPC connected to the TV while the game is being powered by my gaming rig

As a console gamer I'm not totally convinced yet. How will these different "boxes" work, will some be more powerful than others? Will they all be capable of playing even the most powerful games for the next 8 years or so? The reason I like consoles is I don't need to do any maintenance, the PlayStation will work with any game that's made for it.

All they have to do is provide a minimum spec.. And that doesn't even have to be high to keep up with the PS4 and XB1, especially if the OS allows developers to program straight to hardware, or at least more directly than with Windows.

And from there, you can upgrade if you want better graphics.

Here's what John Carmack had to say on twitter, about how MS and Sony might respond:

There is even speculation that Mantle (AMD's low level hardware API that will give console like access to hardware, meaning much better performance) is a direct rip from XBox 1's API, or PS4's.

This will mean 100% direct ports from consoles, running on potentially superior hardware, with little effort by programmers

I'll keep an eye on it, but I don't see it coming in and just taking over the gaming market. If I mentioned Steam to anyone I know who games they'd have no idea what it is.

Who knows maybe I'm wrong but having a bunch of steam boxes of different brands and prices would be confusing as fuck for people who don't already game on PC

Yeah I definitely see that a lot of people (mostly console gamers) are confused and ignorant about what all this really is. Valve has a LOT of work cut out for them in educating these people, that's for sure.
