Check out M-Audio stuff... I haven't followed the industry in a few years now, but back when I was doing this stuff, M-Audio was what a lot of people turned to for controllers. They used to also have mini digital stackable controllers that play very well together as well.

I have my eyes set on the denon mc3000, found a store display model for $300, not really sure if its worth it though since it retails for 350$-400$ brand new.

seems like a good compromise between price and functionality. Seeing as how I'm sure the midi controller will be the first piece of gear i upgrade. Would be nice if it has xlr out and booth out but I doubt I will miss these for awhile.

yeah balanced xlr in/outputs are always great to have. You can possibly find an addition unit that you can use in conjunction with it that provides the the ports you require.
