Beijing's 'Airpocalypse' Spurs Pollution Controls, Public Pressure

Quote:

In China's capital, they're calling it the "airpocalypse," with air pollution that's literally off the charts. The air has been classified as hazardous to human health for a fifth consecutive day, at its worst hitting pollution levels 25 times that considered safe in the U.S. The entire city is blanketed in a thick grey smog that smells of coal and stings the eyes, leading to official warnings to stay inside.

I've always wondered what benefit "staying indoors" has. I mean, the air you breath in at home has to come in from somewhere, no? Chances are the giagantic majority of the population doesn't have filtration devices for incoming air from the great outdoors, so you're still basically breathing in the same crap that you would be by going outside.

My friend is going to Beijing for a month. I feel bad for his lungs, haha.

hirevtuner 01-14-2013 01:52 PM

in the news reports they always blame cars for being the culprit to bad air pollution but really it is a small percentage that actually does pollute but the real culprits are the industrial factories

so that being said, China being known for cheap labour/products and megarichese does have its pluses and minuses

I saw a picture of the air conditions a day or so ago. Day looks like night, and it looks foggy as shit.

What does that do for birth rates over there?

that's not fog and it's not nighttime

Beijing residents have been told to stay indoors as pollution described as the "worst on record" - 30 to 45 times above recommended safety levels - left the city shrouded in dense smog.

Earlier, the US embassy in Beijing tweeted that their own readings were 'beyond index'.

One pollution reading shown on the embassy website showed PM2.5 levels of over 600 micrograms per square metre.

oh shit

SkinnyPupp 01-14-2013 07:43 PM

It's disgusting. If I ever have to go to china (usually guangzou area) for more than a few days, it's always followed by a few days (sometimes weeks) of staying up all night coughing up phlegm

melloman 01-15-2013 07:27 AM

Jesus christ..

Maybe they should shutdown all factories for 3 days. See if it clears up.

What about the sand from the deserts in Asia that gets blown across China? Is that also happening now, thus contributing to the poor air quality?

shenmecar 01-15-2013 11:11 AM

Thats disgusting!

Even from the remote reaches of space, you can almost feel your bronchial trees heaving and dying when looking at this view of China's enduring air pollution. Taken on Sunday by the Suomi NPP satellite, the image above shows a titanic cloak of smog that has settled over the country, turning streetscapes into ghostly gray-outs of choking particulate matter.

...

How bad is it? The U.S. considers air with miniscule particles above 100 micrograms per cubic meter as "unsafe." This weekend, the U.S. Embassy in Beijing logged concentrations almost as high as 900 micrograms. As many as 33 cities had "hazardous" air during the weekend, according to Chinese media, leading to crushes of people seeking medical help for breathing problems and a booming market for face masks.

That air pollution makes it over here too. Not good stuff.

I have a friend that works for CCTV in Beijing. She doesn't even wear those normal sick face mask. She now uses heavy duty 3m face mask.

This type. She says the air burns without the mask.

hud 91gt 01-17-2013 09:04 AM

I was there last month. I had trouble breathing. Felt like asthma. I don't have asthma. lol

Hehe 01-17-2013 09:35 PM

Oh shit... I'm suppose to go there next monday... where do I buy those masks?

On the bright side, I'm going to load my 3 luggages full of those shit and make some some dough! :lawl:
